LAKE CHARLES, La. - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns soccer team used an early goal on the road Friday night and the defense made it stand as the Cajuns blanked McNeese State, 1-0, in UL's first match of the 2010 season.
Allison Baker scored the first goal of her career in the 14th minute at Cowgirl Field. Senior Courtney Hofland assisted on the score, giving her eight career assists and tying her for third place in Cajuns history in that category.
"We had a great team effort tonight," head coach Scot Wieland said. "The girls played their hearts out from start to finish."
Amanda Moorefield (1-0-0) went the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Cajuns (1-0-0), posting her first career clean sheet. The Cajuns defense made that accomplishment a lot easier by holding the Cowgirls to just three shots on goal.
The Cajuns out shot McNeese 18-7 overall, while placing nine of their 18 shots on goal. Senior Kennedy Richards led the Cajuns by firing off five shots while Kayla Henrie added four, putting a team high two on goal.
Louisiana also stayed caution free while McNeese (0-1-0) was shown one yellow card early in the second half.
The Cajuns return to the pitch on Sunday when they welcome Mississippi Valley to Lafayette. The Delta Devilettes and UL are set to kickoff at 1:00 p.m. at the Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon.
