Cajuns Blast Bulldogs In Opener

The Cajuns (1-0) have now shutout their opponents in the last seven season openers at home.
A two-out solo home run to centerfield by Lana Bowers gave the Cajuns an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Gabriele Bridges would fly out to open the second but the next five batters would reach base and score. Erikka Murphy scored from second after Vallie Gaspard reached base on an error. Melissa Verde would hit a double down the right line to bring in two more runs. She would score after Orgeron hit a deep two-run shot to left field for a 6-0 lead.
The Cajuns firepower continued in the third inning posting 7 seven runs on six hits. With two outs, Orgeron would drive in two runs on a double to centerfield. Sarah Drahiem and Britni Soria would both draw walks, loading the bases for Nerissa Myers. Myers was able to rip a line drive into centerfield to clear the bases for a three-RBI double. Gabriele Bridges would drive Myers home on a base hit before reaching home herself on a single by Gaspard.
Verde would lead-off the fourth inning with a home run to left center field. The very next at bat, Orgeron sent a ball over the center field fence for the Cajuns' fourth homer of the afternoon.
The Bulldogs were able to finally get a base runner in the bottom of the fourth after drawing a walk. They recorded their first hit of the day in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Donna Bourgeios recorded the win, pitching 3.0 innings. She faced nine batters, striking out four with no walks or hits.
Verde also saw time in the circle, throwing for one inning. She struck out one batter and allowed one walk.
Freshman pitcher Paige Cavallin wrapped up the game for UL. In one inning pitched, she recorded one strikeout and allowed one hit.
Orgeron finished the day going 3-of-4 from the plate with three runs and five RBI. Three other Cajuns joined Orgeron with a multi-hit performance. Verde went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Murphy was also 2-for-3 with a run. Gaspard also had two hits on the day with two runs and a RBI.
The Cajuns will play two games tomorrow on day two of the 24th Annual Louisiana Classic. The Cajuns will face Bradley at 1:30 p.m. CT before facing Syracuse at 4:00 p.m. CT.
