The first half saw the Cajuns struggle to hold on to the ball, committing 14 turnovers. Despite the sloppy play, UL found itself leading 27-19 at the break.
But in the second half, UL tightened up and limited itself to just six turnovers while shooting nearly 50-percent from the floor (16-of-33).
The Cajuns controlled the start of the game before Montevallo grabbed a slim 12-11 advantage at the 7:47 mark. The lead was fleeting as UL closed out the first half on a 15-8 run.
The Falcons took advantage of the first half turnovers, scoring 11 of their 19 points off the Cajuns' miscues. But UL's defense was stout, limiting Montevallo to just 25.9 percent shooting from the floor (7-27).
Louisiana came out firing on all cylinders to start the second half, hitting six of its first nine shots. The shooting streak led to a 15-3 run, giving the Cajuns a 42-22 lead with 13:30 remaining.
The Falcons began to chip away at the lead, coming within 10 points of the Cajuns. But three-pointers from senior Randell Daigle and junior Josh Brown pushed the lead back to 59-43 with 3:56 remaining.
Four more three-pointers from Daigle and Brown down the stretch sealed the 70-56 win for the Cajuns.
Brown led all Cajuns with 18 points and 10 boards. Three other Cajuns reached double-figures. Daigle posted 11 points while La'Ryan Gary had 12 and Travis Bureau scored 11.
The Cajuns shot 47.2 percent for the game (25-53) and held Montevallo to a paltry 30.5 percent (18-59).
On the battle of the boards, UL prevailed 39-36, but the Falcons overpowered the Cajuns with a 21-14 edge on the offensive glass.
The Cajuns will begin the regular season on Friday night. Former Sun Belt foe New Mexico State returns to Cajundome for first time since the 2004-05 season. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. CT.
