NMSU was impressive from beyond-the-arc, knocking down shots at a 48-percent clip (12-25).
The Cajuns had a decent shooting night of their own, shooting 44.6 percent from the floor (25-56) and 38.9 percent from three-point range (7-18). But it was not enough.
Josh Brown got the Cajuns off to a fast start with a breakaway dunk for the Cajuns' first basket which quickly turned into to a 7-2 lead. But the Aggies were able to hold the Cajuns scoreless for the next four minutes to retake a 13-7 lead.
On multiple occasions, New Mexico State built its lead to as much as seven points but each time the Cajuns would bring it back to a one-possession game. With less than five minutes remaining, UL was a three-pointer away from tying the contest. Yet the basket would not fall.
Then another three-minute scoreless streak saw the Aggies' lead grow to 39-28 with 2:09 remaining. At the half, UL found itself trailing 42-34.
Randell Daigle opened up the second half with a three-pointer but New Mexico State's Troy Gillenwater answered with the Aggies' seventh trey of the night.
Three more three-pointers over the next nine minutes helped increase NMSU's lead to16 points, 51-67, and the Aggies never looked back.
Bureau led UL on 7-of-13 shooting and had a team-high six boards. Josh Brown and David Perez both had 16 in their Cajuns debut. Perez was 6-for-9 on the night, including 4-of-5 from three-point range.
The Aggies' size proved too much for the Cajuns as they went on to win the battle of the boards, 38-31.
Troy Gillenwater led NMSU with 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting.
The Cajuns will return to action on Monday, Nov. 15 as Louisiana College comes to the Cajundome. Tip-off is set for 7:15 p.m. following the women's season opener against LSU-Shreveport.
