UL Opens FAU Series with Pair of Shutouts

4/15/2009 1:15:00 AM | Softball

BOCA RATON, Fla.-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball team swept a doubleheader with Florida Atlantic with a pair of shutout victories.  The Cajuns (27-10, 9-5 Sun Belt) opened the day with an 8-0 five-inning run-rule victory over the Owls (20-23, 3-8 SBC), before closing out the day with a 1-0 victory.

Louisiana received a pair of good pitching performances by Donna Bourgeois.  The sophomore picked up a pair of wins tossing 11.0 shutout innings.  Bourgeois struck out 13 batters while allowing just one walk.  She tossed a complete game shutout and combined with Brittany Cuevas for a second shutout.  On the day, Bourgeois scattered six hits on the day (all singles) and held FAU to a .158 batting average.

In her inning, Cuevas struck out a pair of batters without surrendering a hit or a walk.

Offensively, the Cajuns were led by Gabriele Bridges.  The sophomore slugger finished the day 3-for-5 with a double, a walk and a pair of runs scored.

Lana Bowers and Karli Hubbard each batted .500 on the day, finishing 3-for-6 each.  Hubbard finished with a pair of doubles and an RBI, while Bowers had a double and a pair of runs batted in.

GAME 1 RECAP

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball team opened up a doubleheader with FAU with an 8-0 run-rule victory in five innings.  The Cajuns amassed 10 hits in the game, including four extra base hits as they cruised to the mercy-rule win.

Bourgeois earned the victory in game one.  She tossed four shutout innings, striking out seven batters.  After allowing a leadoff walk in the first inning, Bourgeois retired 11 batters in a row before allowing a base runner.  All seven of her strikeouts came in the stretch of 11 consecutive batters retired.

Offensively, five different UL players each had a pair of hits to total 10 hits in the game.  Bowers, Bridges, Kelly Cormier, Hubbard and Christi Orgeron each had two hits apiece in game one with Bowers, Bridges, Hubbard and Orgeron each collecting doubles in the game.

Bowers led all Cajuns with two runs batted in and Bowers, Cormier and Orgeron each scored a pair of runs each.

The Cajuns threatened in the top of the second inning, but were unable to take the lead.  With one out, Bridges reached base on an infield singe to short.  She moved to second as Bowers made it to first on an error by the Owls.  A walk to Orgeron loaded the bases, but a strikeout and a foul out ended the inning and left the score tied at 0-0.

Louisiana was the first team to score as they plated five runs in the top of the fourth inning.  Codi Runyan led off the inning with a walk and Bridges followed with a base on balls.  Bowers doubled to left center field to give the Cajuns their first two runs of the game.  With a runner on second and no outs, Orgeron followed with a double over the center fielder's head, scoring Bowers easily.  Cormier bounced a single over the pitcher's head to give the Cajuns runners at the corners.  After an out, Vallie Gaspard drove in a run with a ground ball to the pitcher.  With two outs and Cormier on second, Hubbard doubled over the outstretched arm of the center fielder to drive in the final run of the inning and give UL a 5-0 lead after three and a half innings of play.

UL tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth inning.  With one out in the first inning, the Ragin' Cajuns pieced together four consecutive hits to take an 8-0 lead.  Bridges doubled down the right field line and Bowers, Orgeron and Cormier followed with singles to give the Cajuns their first run of the inning.  A fielding error by the hosts allowed two more runs to score and saw UL in front 8-0 after four and a half innings of play.

GAME 2 RECAP

The Ragin' Cajuns completed the two-game sweep with a 1-0 victory in game two.  The Cajuns scored a run in the top of the fifth inning that proved to be the difference in the game as the Cajuns' pitching kept Florida Atlantic off the scoreboard.

For the second straight game, Bourgeois came through with a stellar effort.  The sophomore scattered four hits in the game ? all singles ? and allowed only one batter to reach scoring position in the entire game. Bourgeois struck out six batters in the game and did not allow a walk.

Aside from the pitching, the story of the game was the Louisiana defense.  FAU placed a runner on base with less than two outs four separate times throughout the game and each time the Cajuns defense left the runner stranded.  In the seventh inning, the Owls had a line drive single to third base to start the inning and with the tying run on first base, Bowers had a snap throw over to first base in time to catch the runner and help seal the victory for UL.

Offensively, the Cajuns collected four hits in the game.  Bowers, Bridges, Hubbard and Melissa Verde each had hits in the game.

The Cajuns broke a scoreless deadlock in the top of the fifth inning.  Bridges led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield.  With two outs, Cormier reached on a fielding error by the Owls that allowed Bridges to advance to third base.  With runners on the corners, Louisiana sent Cormier towards second.  While Cormier was caught it a run down, Bridges came around to score from third base to give UL a 1-0 advantage after five and a half innings of play.

The lone run would be the only run scored in the game by the Cajuns as were unable to plate a runner in the sixth or seventh innings.

The Ragin' Cajuns and Owls will conclude the three-game tilt with a single game on Wednesday afternoon.  First pitch in the game is slated for 2:00 p.m. (CENTRAL).
