LAFAYETTE- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns soccer team lost a hard fought battle against North Texas Friday 3-1. The match was the team's Sun Belt Conference opener.

The Cajuns outplayed the Mean Green from the opening whistle and if it weren't for a lucky bounce the Cajuns would have kept North Texas off the scoreboard in the first half.

In the second half, North Texas showed why they have been near the top of the Sun Belt the past nine years. The Mean Green scored two second half goals to spoil the Cajuns conference opener.

The Cajuns offense looked impressive from the get-go. Senior Callie Oliver almost netted a goal in opening five minutes but her shot clanked off the cross-bar. The shot seemed to give the offense a wake up call as they continued to dominate on the Mean Green's half of the pitch.

The Mean Green however netted the first goal of the game when a cross glanced off a Cajun defender and landed on the foot of Kelsey Perlman, who beat Stephanie Weston to put the Mean Green up 1-0.

UL countered 15 minutes later, when sophomore Chelsea Balestra received a pass from Erika Saffer. Balestra turned and took a shot from about 22 yards away which beat the keeper and snuck inside the left post for her second goal of the year.

The Cajuns had many chances in the second half but couldn't find the back of the net.

The story was different for the Mean Green, who scored twice. The first of the second half goals came from Veronica Ayala, who took a shot from 18 yards out to beat the keeper. The second goal came when a loose ball was corralled by Kelsey Perlman who found Ayala; Ayala beat Weston on the left side to make it 3-1 for her second goal of the half.

The Cajuns had a handful of chances after the Ayala goal but couldn't capitalize and the game ended 3-1.

Louisiana got five shots from Heather Fuller. Two of Fuller's shots were on net. Balestra finished with one goal on three shots. Saffer earned her first assist of the season.

Louisiana will look to rebound Sunday when they take on defending Sun Belt champion Denver. The match will start at 1 p.m. at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
