Cajuns Come Up Short

LAFAYETTE- Louisiana's Ragin Cajuns women's soccer team took on Denver Sunday at the Cajun Track/Soccer facility. Denver (9-1-1) came out the winner in hard fought match 2-1.

The Cajuns had a chance 10 minutes in the game when Heather Fuller tried to feed Chelsea Balestra but the pass was just a step ahead of Balestra and Denver goalie Mackenzie Snyder pounced on the loose ball.

Denver came roaring back with a chance of their own, when a shot got a way from goalkeeper Stephanie Weston. Carleigh Martin was playing on the back post and was able to clear the ball out of harms way.

The Ragin' Cajuns opened the scoring in the 20^th minute when Fuller hit Kelli Jestes on a pass at the top of the box. Jestes beat the keeper to the ball and headed it around her before putting the ball in the back of the net. Jestes' goal put her in a tie for UL's career goals record with 12 all-time.

With 11 minutes left in the first half Denver was able tie the match when Mariah Johnson found Jessica Keller streaking on the right side. Keller hit the ball from 25 yards out, the ball glance off Melissa Milton and found the net. The first half ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Wolves opened up the scoring in the second half in the 78^th minute Weston made a brilliant save that found the left foot of Taryn Hemmings; who put it in the back of the empty net. Unfortunately that was how the game ended and the Cajuns fell to 0-2 in conference play.

The Cajuns return to the pitch Oct. 3 to take on Arkansas State in the first of two conference road games that weekend. Game time for the Cajuns match against the Wolves is set for 7 p.m. The following Sunday Oct. 5 UL will take on Arkansas-Little Rock at 1 p.m.
