UL Falls Behind Early, Drops Match

NATCHITOCHES, La.-Despite their best efforts, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns soccer team could not overcome two first-half goals by Northwestern State and fell 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Natchitoches.

The Cajuns drop to 2-5-1 on the season, while the Lady Demons improve to 4-4-1. With the loss, UL falls to 3-5-0 all-time against NSU. The loss is the first for the Cajuns in Natchitoches since Louisiana's inaugural season in 2000.

Trailing 2-0, the Cajuns mounted a comeback in the second half. Just eight minutes into the second half, Kelli Jestes netted her second goal of the season to pull the Cajuns to within one of the hosts. Jestes' goal came off of a pass from Courtney Hofland.

The goal gave Jestes six points on the season and 26 for her career. The sophomore currently stands in fourth place in the Cajuns' annals for career points. Jestes tied Hofland for second place in the Cajuns record books for career goals with 11. The duo is both just one goal shy of Ashley Delahoussaye (2000-03) for the most goals in school history.

With her helper, Hofland tied Stephanie Lynch (2004-07) for the most points in school history with 29. She moved into a tie for fourth place with Callie Oliver and Mette Olesen (2004) for career assists.

Northwestern State wasted little time in the match getting on the scoreboard. The Lady Demons netted a goal in the second minute of the match to take a quick 1-0 lead. Kayce Schultz netted her third goal of the season courtesy of a helper from Chelsea Brozgold.

Brozgold also had the assist in the seventh minute of the match as Haley Cheshire netted her second goal of the season.

The match was close throughout the entire contest. The Cajuns edged the Lady Demons 11-to-10 in shots and saw NSU take one more shot on goal. Both goalkeepers Stephanie Weston and Lindy Strahan had three saves apiece.

The Ragin' Cajuns will look to change their fortunes on Friday night as they return to the Cajuns Soccer Facility to open up Sun Belt Conference play. The Cajuns will play host to North Texas on Friday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. before taking on Denver on Sunday, Nov. 28 in an afternoon match at 1 p.m.
