Men?s and Women?s Tennis Tops Alcorn, 7-0

LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's and women's tennis teams easily swept Alcorn State 7-0 on Wednesday at Cajun Courts. The victory moves the men to 4-6 on the season, while the women move to 9-3.

 

For the UL men, the Cajuns picked up all six singles matches. Freshman Stefan Hawkins quickly defeated Gordon Reaux 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Junior Arlen Domoney and sophomore Jorge Delgado both defeated their opponents 6-1, 6-2. At No. 1, sophomore Piotrek Banas bested Abdurazzakov 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1.  Freshman Alexander Rupertsson topped German Castillo 7-6, 6-0 at No. 6. Freshman Murilo Martins captured a hard fought match against Yanick Hawkins in three sets. Martins won 6-2, 5-7, 10-2 at No. 4.

 

In doubles play, senior Ryan Hess and sophomore Janusz Conradi bested Abdurazzakov and Mike Okada 8-4 at No. 1, and freshman Piotr Olechowski and Banas topped P. Raypurotti and Hawkins 8-3 at No. 2. Delgado and Domoney defeated Reaux and Castillo 8-0 at No. 3.

 

Coach Mark Jeffrey said he was extremely impressed with the way his team is playing right now.

 

“We are definitely playing our best tennis of the season,” he said.

 

For the UL women, sophomore Myrthe Molenveld easily bested Katherine Hopelman 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while freshman Briggit Marcovich topped Felicia Chien 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4. Freshman Mia Gordon defeated Avernelle Holder 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5, and sophomore Marina Ruiz de Gauna bested Sarah Jo Peters 6-2, 7-6 at No. 6. Freshman Julie Mazinova helped the Cajuns' cause with her 6-3, 6-0, retired victory over Swetha Devaraj at No. 1. Freshman Kim van der Horst defeated Stefania Guzman 6-7, 6-3, 10-6 at No. 2.

 

In doubles action, van der Horst and Marcovich defeated Devaraj and Peters 8-5 at No. 1, while Molenveld and junior Angela Dangond topped Guzman and Hopelman 8-3 at No. 2. At No. 3, Mazinova and Gordon bested Chien and Holder 8-2.

 

The UL men will be back in action on Sunday, March 9 when they face Texas-San Antonio at Cajun Courts. The match is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. The women will face South Alabama in Mobile on Saturday, March 8. The match is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
