MONROE, La.-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team opened up a three-game Sun Belt Conference series with Louisiana-Monroe with a 5-2 victory on Friday night at the ULM Baseball Complex.

The win improves the Cajuns to 33-13 overall and 16-6 in Sun Belt play, while the loss drops the Warhawks to 27-21 and 14-10 in conference.

The Ragin' Cajuns got 6.2 strong innings from starting pitcher Danny Farquhar.  Farquhar was pressed into action after normal Friday night starter Buddy Glass was scratched because of tightness in his shoulder.  The sophomore hurler allowed just a pair of runs on six hits on the way to his fourth victory of the season.  Farquhar fanned a career high 11 batters, while issuing just two walks.  The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native retired eleven in a row after surrendering a leadoff double in the first.  Five of his 11 consecutive batters retired were strikeout victims.

Farquhar gave way to Gregory Harmon in the seventh inning.  Harmon held the Warhawks scoreless over the final 2.1 innings of work en route to picking up his third save of the season.  Harmon struck out six batters without issuing a walk.  He did not allow a base hit.

Offensively, Matt Hicks, Jonathan Lucroy and Jefferies Tatford combined for six of the Ragin' Cajuns nine hits.  Each batter collected a pair of hits with an extra-base hit apiece.  Hicks collected his fourth homerun of the season, while Lucroy and Tatford both added RBI doubles.

The Cajuns wasted little time and took the lead in the first inning.  Hicks led off the game with a single up the middle.  Devon Bourque moved Hicks to second base as he successfully executed the sacrifice bunt.  With a runner on second and one out, Lucroy collected his team leading 52n)d RBI of the season, as he doubled to right centerfield.

Leading 1-0, UL extended their lead in the top of the fourth inning.  Lucroy started the inning off with a walk.  He advanced to second as Scott Hawkins drew a base on balls.  Tatford doubled down the left field line to score Lucroy from second base.  A sacrifice fly from Nolan Gisclair scored Hawkins from third and gave the Cajuns a 3-0 advantage.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Ragin' Cajuns added an insurance run.  Bourque led off the inning with a double through the right side of the infield.  After back-to-back outs, Tatford singled up the middle to score Bourque and give the Cajuns a 4-0 edge after five and a half innings of play.

The Warhawks cut the UL lead in half in the bottom of the seventh inning.  ULM started the inning with a triple to right centerfield.  An RBI single to left center put Louisiana-Monroe on the scoreboard.  The Ragin' Cajuns recorded the next two outs, but a double to centerfield plated the second run of the inning and cut the Cajuns lead to 4-2.

The Cajuns scored their final run of the game in the ninth inning.  With two outs, Hicks hit his fourth homerun of the season over the left field fence to give UL a 5-2 edge, which would prove to be the final score.

The Ragin' Cajuns and Warhawks will play the second game of the three-game series on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at ULM Baseball Complex.
