Hunter Moody pitched his third complete game of the season as the Cajuns won 5-0.
LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns opened their three game series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with a 5-0 shutout behind the arm of Hunter Moody Friday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
Moody threw his third complete game of the season collecting his fifth win of 2006. The southpaw fanned nine batters scattering just four hits and not allowing a walk. Moody allowed only one extra base hit in the game and only allowed two batters to reach second base. The sophomore had a stretch in the game where he retired 13 consecutive batters.
On the season, the Cajuns (17-12) have seen their starting pitchers throw six complete games. The Cajuns are currently 5-1 when a pitcher tosses a complete game. Moody leads the team with three complete games on the season. The lefty is a perfect 3-for-3 in complete games, earning wins over No. 15 Texas A&M, Arkansas State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Buddy Glass has thrown a pair of complete games for the Cajuns, while Jason Fernandez has thrown one.
Offensively, the Ragin' Cajuns scored five runs on seven hits. Senior John McCarthy had only one hit, but made it count. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, the outfielder lined a double to left field to plate three runners and break the game open for Louisiana.
Neither team generated anything offensively in the early goings of the game. Through the first four innings of the game, the two teams combined for just three hits with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi edging out the Cajuns two hits to one.
The Ragin' Cajuns started to warm up in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jefferies Tatford doubled to right centerfield to give the Cajuns their first runner in scoring position of the night. Grant Derouen followed Tatford with a single to right to advance the runner. Tatford scored as Josh Landry hit his team leading sixth sacrifice fly to deep left field.
UL broke the game open in the seventh inning. Jonathan Lucroy started the inning with a double down the left field line. Lucroy advanced to third as Scott Hawkins singled just over the head of the Islanders' third baseman. Tatford was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Derouen drew a base on balls to score the second Cajuns' run of the evening. With the bases loaded, McCarthy doubled to plate all three baserunners and give the Cajuns a 5-0 lead, which they would not relinquish.
The Ragin' Cajuns and Islanders will continue the three game series with a game on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 2:05 p.m. The game will be televised locally on KLAF UPN 17 in Lafayette.
