Louisiana-Lafayette leaves eight runners stranded in 6-3 loss at Louisiana Tech

Wednesday, April 5, 2006

RUSTON - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team saw their four-game winning streak snapped by Louisiana Tech on Tuesday afternoon at J.C. Love Field.

The Cajuns were not able to generate any offense at key moments of the game and fell to the Bulldogs by a score of 6-3.

UL left eight men stranded on base and hit in to a pair of double plays on the day.

Starting pitcher Danny Farquhar took the loss for the Cajuns. The freshman threw 6.0 innings allowing four runs on seven hits including a two-run homerun. Farquhar struck out six batters, while only walking one.

Offensively, Louisiana collected seven hits including a ninth inning homerun by Devery Van De Keere. Jonathan Lucroy was the only Cajuns batter with multiple hits. The catcher had a pair of singles up the middle and also scored a run.

Louisiana Tech took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. After giving up a one-out single, Brian Rike hit a homerun to right field to break the scoreless tie. The two-run homerun was the first homer allowed by and only the third extra base hit allowed by the freshman.

The Cajuns were able to cut the Tech lead in the top of the third inning. John McCarthy bunted to first base for his first hit of the afternoon. He advanced to second on a Bulldog wild pitch. A groundout moved McCarthy to third base and he came around to score on another wild pitch cutting the LT lead to 2-1.

The Bulldogs added some insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Joey McCarthy led off the inning with a single. A sacrifice bunt advanced him to second base. Adam Cobb hit a ball right to the Ragin' Cajuns shortstop Jameson Parker, but Parker was shielded by the runner and the ball rolled into the outfield. McCarthy came around to score on the play giving Louisiana Tech a 3-1 lead. The next batter Jericho Jones lined a single through the left side to plate Cobb. On the play, the Bulldogs had the hit-and-run in effect drawing Parker towards second base and out of position to make a play on the ball lined to short. The Cajuns retired the next two batters, but ended the fifth inning trailing 4-1.

In the sixth inning, the Cajuns scratched out a run to cut the LT lead. With two outs, Lucroy singled up the middle and advanced to second as Jefferies Tatford drew a base on balls. Alex Preciado hit an RBI single up the middle to plate Lucroy and cut the lead to 4-2.

The Ragin' Cajuns threatened in the seventh inning. Devon Bourque reached base on a walk. The Cajuns' McCarthy hit the ball to third base, but the first baseman covering came off of the bag before he caught the throw allowing McCarthy to reach base safely. Bourque never hesitated running the bases and was able to reach third base safely on the error. With a runner 90-feet away from home plate, UL was not able to generate any offense and plate the runner.

In the seventh inning, Greg Wilborn entered the game to pitch for the Cajuns. Wilborn surrendered a double to Louisiana Tech's McCarthy. A single moved the base runner to third base and McCarthy scored on a fielder's choice to increase the Bulldog's lead to 5-2.

The Cajuns led off the ninth inning with a Van De Keere homerun, but were not able to get any closer and fell to the Bulldogs by a final score of 6-3.

The Ragin' Cajuns will return to action on Friday as they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a three game series. The first game of the series is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
