Missed Opportunities Cost Cajuns

MOBILE, Ala.-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns failed to capitalize on their opportunities and fell in the series finale to South Alabama, 2-0, at Stanky Field.

Sophomore hurler Buddy Glass pitched a complete game, but took the loss surrendering a pair of runs on the day. Glass' complete game loss snapped a six game streak of Cajuns pitchers winning when hurling a complete game. The last Ragin' Cajuns pitcher to earn a loss when throwing a complete game was Kevin Ardoin. Ardoin threw a complete game on April 23, 2004, taking a 3-2 loss against Florida International in Miami.

Glass scattered eight hits on the day and only allowed a pair of runs. He struck out three while walking two.

The sophomore hurler received no help offensively as the Cajuns recorded just four hits on the afternoon as a team. Despite the poor offensive performance, the Cajuns still managed 10 baserunners.

The Cajuns took advantage of five walks and a hit by pitch, but due to the poor offense on the day, left all 10 baserunners stranded, including several in scoring position.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Jaguars took a 1-0 lead. South Alabama's Aaron George hit a solo homerun to left field to put the Jaguars on the scoreboard.

The homerun was only the second homer of the year that starting pitcher Buddy Glass had allowed all season. The last homerun Glass surrendered was against Texas-San Antonio. Glass did not factor in the decision against UTSA as the Cajuns fell 5-2 in 12 innings.

The Cajuns threatened in the top of the third inning, but were unable to scratch the scoreboard. Devon Bourque led off the inning with a walk and stole second to move into scoring position. The junior advanced to third base on a wild pitch, but would get no further as the Jaguars struckout the final two UL batters.

For the second inning in a row, the Cajuns threatened but were unable to plate any runners. In fourth inning, Jonathan Lucroy led off the inning with a base on balls. Freshman Scott Hawkins advanced Lucroy to second base with a single through the left side of the infield. A sacrifice bunt by Jefferies Tatford moved the runners up a base, but once again, the Cajuns failed to plate a runner.

The Jaguars added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. George, who hit a solo homerun in the second inning, was struck by a pitch. He came across to score advancing on a pair of singles pushing the USA lead to 2-0.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, John McCarthy reached base after being hit by a pitch. McCarthy stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the USA catcher. For the third straight inning, the Cajuns failed to score a run and left a runner on third base.

The Cajuns could not get anything going offensively and ended the game with just four hits.

The Ragin' Cajuns will play a pair of games during the week. The Cajuns will travel to Hammond to play in-state rival Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday, March 29, UL returns home for a game against Northwestern State. The game, which was not on the original schedule, is a make up game due to a game which was canceled earlier in the season. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
