LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns concluded the 2006 Mardi Gras Ball Baseball Classic Sunday afternoon with a 12-8 victory over in-state rival Louisiana-Monroe. The victory for the Cajuns (2-1) was head coach Tony Robichaux's 400th career-win in a Cajuns uniform.

The Cajuns' offense erupted for 13 hits on the night, including a pair of homeruns, a triple and a double.

Five Cajuns had multiple hits in the game. Senior Jameson Parker led the team with three hits on the evening.

Right fielder John McCarthy reached base five times on the evening collecting two hits, walking twice and reaching base on a fielder's choice. The right fielder scored three runs on the night and also had a run batted in.

Jonathan Lucroy and Devery Van De Keere both had a pair of hits on the night including one homerun a piece.

Lucroy went deep for the Cajuns in the first inning. The sophomore hit a solo shot to left field to tie the score at 2-2. In the eighth inning, Van De Keere hit a two run homer down the right field line for his first homerun at UL.

Andrew Laughter picked up the win for the Cajuns. The junior from Longwood, Fla., pitched 4.2 innings allowing just two runs. Laughter struck out five batters while walking none.

With the score knotted at five apiece, the Cajuns broke the game wide open in the sixth inning. The Cajuns would take advantage of a pair of Indian errors and three hits to plate four runners in the inning and take a 9-5 lead.

Devon Bourque reached base safely on a fielder's choice and would advance to second base thanks to a throwing error by ULM. Bourque would score on a single up the middle by McCarthy. Like Bourque, McCarthy would advance to second on the Indian's throw to the plate. A deep fly ball by Parker advanced McCarthy to third base. Josh Landry would reach base courtesy of Louisiana-Monroe's second error of the inning, allowing McCarthy to score. Lucroy would drop a bloop single into right field to score Landry. Lucroy would then come into score thanks to a triple by Jefferies Tatford.

Both teams would score a pair of runs in the first inning to end the frame tied at 2-2. The Cajuns used a walk and a single to place a McCarthy on third base. The senior would come around to score on a ULM double play. The Ragin' Cajuns would score their second run of the evening as Lucroy hit a solo homerun to left field.

In the third inning the Cajuns would take the lead thanks to three hits and a pair of ULM errors. Louisiana-Lafayette would score three runs in the inning to take a 5-2 lead.

Louisiana-Monroe would respond in the top of the fourth inning. The Indians would tie the game thanks to control issues by the Cajuns starting pitcher Greg Wilborn. The freshman walked two batters and also hit another batter in the inning. A ULM single and an error by the Cajuns allowed ULM to tie the score at five apiece.

The score would remain tied at 5-5 until the pivotal sixth inning.

The Cajuns would add a run in the seventh inning as Alex Preciado scored on a wild pitch.

Van De Keere's two-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning rounded out the scoring for the Ragin' Cajuns.

The Cajuns will travel to Thibodaux, La. to face Nicholls State in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Feb. 28. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Ray E. Didier Field. The Cajuns will return to M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field on Wednesday, March 1, as UL takes on McNeese State. The game with the Cowboys was added to the schedule after UL and MSU were canceled on Tuesday, Feb. 21 due to inclement weather. Wednesday's game is set for 6:30 p.m.
