LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team could find no offense against Purdue, falling 5-1 on Friday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field at the Mardi Gras Ball Baseball Classic.
The Cajuns, who fell to 1-1 on the season, had just three hits on the night and struck out 13 times.
The only offensive production for the Cajuns came from seniors John McCarthy, Jameson Parker and Josh Landry. The trio each collected one hit for the Cajuns, and McCarthy scored the Cajuns' only run on an RBI single from Parker.
The Cajuns pitching staff allowed five runs on the night, striking out six while walking none. UL's pitchers allowed 13 Boilermaker hits on the night.
Offensively for Purdue, four Boilermaker batters had two hits apiece. Eric Wolf had one hit, but drove in three runs to lead Purdue.
Starting pitcher Jay Buente shined in the win, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He struck out 11 batters while only walking three.
The Boilermakers scratched the scoreboard in the first inning. Purdue's Mitch Hilligoss reached base on a single up the middle. He then stole second base to give Purdue a runner in scoring position. Hilligoss advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored thanks to a fielding error by Cajuns' pitcher Hunter Moody.
McCarthy would get the Cajuns' first hit of the game in the fifth inning. McCarthy would steal second and come around to score on a Parker single tying the score at 1-1.
Purdue would take the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Spencer Ingaldson started the inning with a single down the left field line. Dane Wolfe would triple to right center to plate Ingaldson. A double by John Hunter would score the second run of the inning for the Boilermakers. Brandt Sanders would enter the game for the Cajuns and halt the Purdue onslaught.
Three hits and a pair of sacrifice bunts helped the Boilermakers add to their lead. Purdue would score two runs to take a 5-1 lead over the Cajuns.
The Cajuns would threaten in the bottom of the eighth inning. Following a Parker walk, Landry dropped a single into right centerfield giving the Cajuns runners on first and second. The runners would advance on a wild pitch, but would be left stranded.
The Cajuns will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25 as they take on the Kansas State Wildcats in the second day of competition at the Mardi Gras Ball Baseball Classic. The game is scheduled to start at 2:05 p.m. at the Tigue.
