LAFAYETTE-With the score tied at 56-56 with 2:14 remaining in the game, Jeanenne Colbert scored six straight points to lift Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team over Arkansas-Little Rock, 65-61, Thursday afternoon at Earl K. Long Gym.
Colbert, who scored a season high 23 points, made the back end of a pair of free throws to break a 56-56 tie. Following a missed basket by UALR, Colbert extended the Cajuns' lead with a jumper.
After extending the UL lead to 60-56 with a free throw, Colbert again drained a jumper to give the Ragin' Cajuns a six point advantage.
The Cajuns would need all six of those points as UALR cut the lead with a triple by Kim Sitzmann.
Sitzmann cut the UL lead to just one as she made a pair of free throws with just 17 seconds remaining.
A pair of free throws by Onna Charles and a freebie by Alicia McDaniel secured the victory for the Ragin' Cajuns.
Both teams shot the ball well with UL shooting 48.1-percent and UALR at a 44.9-percent clip. UALR had most of their success from behind the arc, connecting on 10-of-19 triples (52.6-percent).
The two teams matched each other with 31 rebounds apiece.
Colbert led the Cajuns with 23 points followed by Charles who contributed 10.
Yolanda Jones was held to single-digit scoring for just the third time this season. Her nine points breaks a streak of nine consecutive games with double-digit scoring.
Jones led the Cajuns with seven rebounds. She was followed by McDaniel who pulled down six boards.
Courtney Ratliff added a spark off the bench netting six points in just 11 minutes, while pulling down four rebounds and adding a steal.
Leading 8-5, UALR made a basket at the 15:17mark of the first half to cut the Cajuns advantage to just one.
Following the basket the Ragin' Cajuns proceeded to go on a 14-0 run to take a 15-point lead with 7:40 remaining in the first half.
Kina Miller started off the run by hitting the first half of a pair of free throws.
Colbert made the next seven points, netting a pair of lay-ups and draining a three from the top of the key.
Charles followed with a pair of jumpers to increase the Cajuns advantage to 13-points with 8:20 remaining in the half.
Jones, who was quieted in the first half, made her only basket of the half to conclude the run and give UL a 22-7 edge.
During the run, the Cajuns defense held the nation's 14th-ranked scoring offense to 0-for-9 shooting and caused six Trojan turnovers.
With the Cajuns leading by 15, Arkansas-Little Rock battled back and finished the half with a 10-0 run of their own.
During the Trojans run, the Cajuns were held scoreless for 5:06 and failed to convert on six consecutive offensive possessions.
Colbert ended UALR's run with a triple with just 21 second remaining in the half, but after leading by as many as 15, the Cajuns hung onto a 29-24 at halftime.
The two teams exchanged baskets in the second half, but the Cajuns held on to their first half lead for most of the frame.
The Cajuns led by as many as nine and as few as two until UALR's Nikya Hughes made a three-pointer with 3:45 on the clock to give the Trojans their first lead since the score was 5-4 at the 18:39 mark of the first half.
A free throw extended the Trojans lead, but a triple from Colbert gave the Cajuns a one-point edge with 2:38 on the clock.
UALR tied the score at 56-56 before Colbert took control.
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team will return to action as they hit the road to play Louisiana-Monroe. The game with ULM will be a doubleheader with the men's team. The women are set to tip-off at 4:30 p.m. with the men's game to follow.
