New Orleans, La.-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns had little problems with New Orleans on Monday night, topping the Lady Privateers 70-46 at the Human Performance Center in the heart of the UNO campus.
The game marked the first played by UNO at the “Chamber of Horrors” since Feb. 26, 1983.
Louisiana improves to 14-4 (4-2), while UNO falls to 2-16 (0-6). The win ties UL head coach J. Kelley Hall (57-47) with Ross Cook (57-51) as the Cajuns career leader in women's basketball coaching victories.
The Cajuns carried a 22-point lead into the second half. That lead dipped to 20 points in the first two minutes of the second stanza, but UL responded with a 9-2 run over the next three minutes to build their lead up to 27 points, 54-27.
Louisiana's lead eventually hit 30 points, 65-35, at the 6:59 mark.
Yolanda Jones led four Cajuns in double figures with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Ashley Blanche had 12 points and Jeanenne Colbert and Whitney Dunlap had 11 and 10 points off the bench, respectively. Dunlap's 10 points marked a career high.
The Cajuns scored the game's first eight points. Three-pointers by Alicia McDaniel and Blanche came in between a lay-up by Sonora Edwards.
UNO scored the next eight points to tie the game.
UL came back to take the lead, 10-8, on an offensive rebound and put-back by Sherita Anderson at 14:12.
The Cajuns took control of the game a little over six minutes later with a 24-4 scoring blast.
It started with an 8-0 run to boost the visitors lead to 10 points, 27-17, at the 6:13 mark. UL did all their damage in the paint. Jones started the run inside, before Edwards powered-up consecutive baskets. Colbert finished the burst with a driving basket.
Talishia Young stopped the Cajuns scoring stretch, but then Jones came back with nine unanswered points to give the Cajuns a 36-19 lead with 2:43 remaining in the first half.
After a Cookie Johnson bucket, the Cajuns scored the final seven points of the half. Onna Charles hit a jumper before two free throws by Blanche. Colbert ended the half with a 28-foot triple to give UL a 43-21 lead at the break.
