Louisiana-Lafayette's Micah Cockrell struck out a
career-high seven batters in second victory
MONROE – Micah Cockrell produced his second strong pitching performance out of the bullpen in the last three games, while freshman designated hitter Jonathan Lucroy went 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the No. 20-ranked Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns to an 11-4 victory over the Louisiana-Monroe Indians here Wednesday night at Indian Field.
Louisiana-Lafayette (26-6) improved to 6-2 against Southland Conference opponents this season, while moving over the .500-mark on the road (4-3) for the first time this season. Louisiana-Monroe (16-13) lost for the sixth time in its last eight games.
Cockrell (2-1) earned the win, allowing one run on three hits 4 1/3 innings while striking out a career-high seven batters with one walk. In the ninth inning, senior reliever Kraig Schambough made his 86th career appearance, tying him with Andy Gros for first on the school's all-time list.
Louisiana-Lafayette plated two runs in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead over Louisiana-Monroe.
With two runners on and one out in the first inning, Lucroy delivered a two-RBI double to right-centerfield to quickly take a 2-0 advantage.
Indians starting pitcher Matt Lane (2-4) didn't last long as he was pulled after the first inning. Lane allowed two runs on one hit with two walks.
The Cajuns opened the second inning with back-to-back singles. After a Justin Merendino fielder's choice and a John Coker strikeout, Josh Landry drew his second consecutive walk to load the bases. John McCarthy cleared the bases with a two-RBI single to shallow left field, giving the Cajuns a four-run lead.
Louisiana-Monroe cut the Cajuns' lead in half, 4-2, in the third inning. With one out, Steve Lawler singled to right field. After a Justin LaBorde fly out, James Bennett advanced Lawler to third with a single to center field. Daniel Raymond then drew a walk to load the bases. Ty Rollinson followed with a two-RBI single back up the middle, plating Lawler and Bennett to give the Indians their first two runs of the game.
The Cajuns answered with a run in the fourth to extend their lead to 5-2. Jameson Parker led off with a single through the left side. After Merendino flied out, Coker scored Parker with a triple to right-centerfield, giving the Cajuns a three-run advantage.
The Indians responded with a run of their own, cutting the Cajuns' lead back to two runs, 5-3. Louisiana-Lafayette starting pitcher Hunter Moody surrendered the RBI single to Lawler which plated Glenn Jackson.
After the Indians scored their third run of the game, Moody was replaced in favor of Cockrell out of the bullpen. Moody lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Louisiana-Lafayette added three more runs in the fifth inning to increase its lead to five runs, 8-3. Lucroy led off with a double down the left field line. Dallas Morris followed with a single to centerfield, which advanced Lucroy to second. Jefferies Tatford drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.
After a Justin Morgan strikeout, Parker's dribbling two-RBI single through the right side plated Lucroy and Morris to give the Cajuns a 7-3 advantage. The Cajuns put one more run on the scoreboard with a Merendino sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Tatford.
With a runner on with two outs in the seventh, the Indians moved to within four runs, 8-4, as Raymond scored on a Merendino throwing error.
Louisiana-Lafayette scored two insurance runs in the eighth, increasing its lead to six runs, 10-4. Landry was a hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. McCarthy then hit a single through the left side, advancing Landry to third on a well-executed hit-and-run.
Lucroy followed with an RBI single through the left side of the Indians defense, scoring Landry. McCarthy later advanced to third on a Morris fly out to right field. Tatford's sacrifice bunt in front of home plate scored McCarthy to give the Cajuns a 10-4 advantage.
The Cajuns scored one more run in the ninth, increasing their lead to 11-4.
Lucroy led the Cajuns offensively, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI. Parker went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. McCarthy went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Coker also knocked in two runs for the Cajuns.
Rollinson went 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Indians. Five different Indians batters had two hits.
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns return to action this weekend when they host former Sun Belt Conference member Texas-Pan American in a three-game series at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field. Friday's game will start at 6:30 p.m., followed by Saturday's game at 2:05 p.m. and Sunday's game at 1 p.m. Saturday's game will be televised on KLAF-TV Channel 17 in the Lafayette area.
