Capture 2005 Rainbow Baseball Tournament
Louisiana-Lafayette Sets School Record with 14-0 Start
Friday, March 4, 2005
HONOLULU
- No. 21 Louisiana's Ragin'
Cajuns captured the 2005 Rainbow Baseball Tournament title
on Friday thanks to a 6-2 victory over UC Davis.
The Cajuns
finish the tournament on Saturday against host Hawaii, but
can finish no worse than tied with Wichita State, whom the
Cajuns defeated 19-3 to open tournament play.
The victory
also gives UL a perfect 14-0 record, marking the best start
in school history.
Louisiana
capitalized on Aggies mistakes, scoring three runs from
third base on wild pitches and adding another run thanks to
a throwing error. UL did give UC Davis (7-9) an unearned
run on a fielding error.
The Cajuns
had six hits and the benefit of seven walks.
After
throwing his first five pitches for balls, starter Buddy Glass (1-0) settled down to allow just three hits and an
unearned run over eight innings. Glass walked three and
struck out five.
The Cajuns
scored first, plating a pair of runs in the second. John McCarthy walked and advanced to third on a double by
Jonathan Lucroy. UL made it 1-0 when McCarthy scored on a
wild pitch and 2-0 when Lucroy scored on John Coker's
double.
Louisiana
threatened to add more runs in the fourth inning. UL loaded
the bases with one out thanks to singles by Dallas Morris
and Jameson Parker and a walk to Lucroy. Coker struck out
and Josh Landry flied out to dissolve the threat.
Justin Merendino and Phillip Hawke started things for the Cajuns in
the fifth with a single and a walk, respectively.
McCarthy's sacrifice was successful and then some as the
third baseman's throw was errant resulting in a two-base
error. Merendino scored on the error and Hawke came home on
a sacrifice fly by Morris. McCarthy then stole third base
before Lucroy walked again to put runners on the corners
with one out for Micah Cockrell. McCarthy scored on a wild
pitch to give UL a 5-0 lead. Cockrell stuck out, but Parker
reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. Another wild
pitch plated Lucroy to build the Cajuns lead to 6-0.
The Aggies
managed a hit off Glass in the third, fifth and eighth
innings.
