Texas State Scores Two Runs in Eighth Inning to take 7-5 Win

LAFAYETTE – Texas State scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 7-5 victory over Miami University here Friday in game one of the Mardi Gras Ball Baseball Classic at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

Jarod Garza (2-0) got the win for Texas State (9-2), going 2 1/3 innings. Garza allowed one run on three hits, while striking out two. Scott Moore got his second save of the season, pitching the last inning for the Bobcats.

Miami's Jeff Day (0-1) got the loss. Day allowed the two runs in the bottom of the eighth that gave the Bobcats the victory.

After an up-and-down first inning, Texas State put the first runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. A two-run home run to left field by Jose Rodriguez gave the Bobcats an early 2-0 lead.

Texas State added two more runs in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead with a Nolan Mast hit an opposite-field two-run home run.

Miami equaled the score in the sixth with a four-run inning. Jon Franzese singled to left to plate Geoff Orr, then Brian Canada sent a one-out RBI single to left, scoring Tyler Tabler to cut the Bobcats' lead to 4-2.

Eric Radley singled to right center, scoring Franzese to get the RedHawks to within one run, 4-3. Canada scored on a Ryne Robinson fielder's choice.

The Bobcats took the lead once again in the bottom of the sixth, 5-4.

The RedHawks tied the game 5-5 in the seventh on a Tabler double to right field.

Texas State retook the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Mast singled, followed by a David Bednarek double down the left field line. Dominic Ramos plated the go-ahead run with a single through the left side. Bednarek later scored on a Kyle Anson sacrifice fly.

Miami (Ohio) will face host-Louisiana-Lafayette in game three of the Mardi Gras Ball Baseball Classic Saturday at 2 p.m. Texas State will follow in game four against Marist College at 6 p.m.
