The run support in
the second inning was more than enough for freshman
Heather Bobbitt (left) who was making her first career start.
Bobbitt went the distance, tossing five innings of three-hit softball while striking out seven PV batters.
Lacey Bertucci drove in a team-high three runs for the Cajuns while Danyele Gomez led the way with two hits.
As a team, UL Lafayette (9-1) hit three doubles and two home runs as five-of-six hits went for extra bases.
Brittany Bryant
(right) got things rolling for the Cajuns in the second with a one-out walk. Holly Tankersley then drove a double deep
into right field that allowed Bryant to round the bases
for a 1-0 lead.
Prairie View pitcher Jaime Cain then lost control of the strike zone, issuing three walks and hitting two batters.
After Tankersley's two-bagger, Leslie Pierce was hit by pitch and Crystal George walked to load the bases.
Cain's struggles continued when she hit Tiffany Hebert to force home Tankersley with the Cajun second run of the inning.
After Hillary Guidry struck out swinging for the second out, Gomez reached base on a fielder's choice grounder to shortstop. PV shortstop Laura Quezada attempted the force of George at third, but the throw was late and everyone was safe allowing pinch runner Ashley Evans to score the third run and give Louisiana-Lafayette a 3-0 lead.
Cain then issued another bases loaded walk to Joy Webre and another run crossed the plate making it 4-0.
Bertucci (below)
collected
her three RBI on the next at bat, lifting a towering
shot into left field over the head of PV's Rosaline Ash
to clear the bases.
The Cajuns finished off the scoring with two home runs in the fifth.
Bryant hit her third homer of the season and then freshman Christine Collins followed up with her first career dinger to give UL Lafayette its 9-0 cushion.
Prairie View's lone threat came in the third inning when the Panthers picked up two hits, but would leave the runners stranded.
Cain suffered the loss for the Panthers (0-4) tossing five innings allowing nine runs off of six hits. She issued four free passes and struck out eight.
With the win, Louisiana-Lafayette extended its season-high win streak to seven games and pushed its home win streak to 27 dating back to last season.
The host-Ragin' Cajuns wrap up play on day one in an 8:15 p.m. matchup with Texas Tech (4-9).
Prairie View is done for day one and ended 0-2. PV opens day two action at 9 a.m. against Southeastern Louisiana (4-9).
