Demons Come Back to Take 6-5 Win over Red Storm
LAFAYETTE – Northwestern State scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 game one victory over St. John's in the Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational here Friday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
NSU's Kyle Brouthton (1-0) earned the win for the Demons, going 1/3 of an inning. Daniel Desclouds received the save, going three complete innings, allowing two hits with three strikeouts. St. John's pitcher Justin Muir (0-1) got the loss, going two innings, allowing four runs on three hits.
St. John's got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Blake Hershelman was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Anthony Smith reached on a fielder's choice; Hershelman was thrown out at second on the play. Smith then advanced to second on a Will Vogl ground out. Gil Zayas' single to right centerfield plated Smith to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead. Brendan Monaghan struck out to end the inning.
The Red Storm added another run in the bottom of the third to increase its lead to 2-0. Sam DeLuca reached on a Ben Rodriguez throwing error. Jim Martin followed with a bunt single that dribbled down the third base line, advancing DeLuca to second. P.J. Antoniato's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third with one out. Greg Thomson plated DeLuca with a sacrifice fly to center field, making the score 2-0. Hershelman grounded out to end the third inning.
The Demons evened the score in the top of the fifth. Eric Epperson singled to right field and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hunter Thoms flied out to center field. Michael Flower followed with a strikeout. Rusty Jones then doubled to left centerfield, plating Epperson. Rodriguez singled to right field to score Rusty Jones, tying the game 2-2.
St. John's regained the lead in the sixth with three runs to go ahead 5-2. Greg Thomson singled to center field and later stole second base. Thomson advanced to third on a throwing error by NSU starting pitcher Daniel Lonsberry. Hershelman plated Thomson with a single to left field, giving the Red Storm a 3-2 lead. Vogl and Zayas each flied out. Brendan Monaghan then doubled down the left line to score Anthony Smith and Hershelman, increasing SJU's lead to 5-2.
In the seventh, however, Northwestern State responded with four runs to retake the lead, 6-5. Hunter Thoms drew a lead off walk. Casey DeRosa sent a one-out single through the left side, advancing Thoms to second. Ben Rodriguez struck out looking for the second out. Marty Dewees then drew a walk to load the bases. Brandon Morgan sent a three RBI double to right centerfield to even the score, 5-5. Bobby Barbier then doubled down the left field line to plate Morgan, giving the Demons a 6-5 lead.
Morgan led the Demons at the plate, going 1-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Barbier and Rodriguez each added two hits.
Jim Martin paced St. John's, going 3-for-5 from the plate.
St. John's will play the host team Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns at 2 p.m. on Saturday, while Northwestern State will face Southern at 6:30 p.m. in game four of the Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational.
