HUNTSVILLE, Texas –
After a two hour and four
minute delay, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns (3-0) were able to
play seven innings, trailing 6-4 to the Sam Houston State
Bearkats, before the game was suspended due to darkness here
Wednesday evening at Holleman Field.
The game will resume
on Wednesday, May 4, in Lafayette prior to the night's
regularly scheduled game against the Bearkats at 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday's game was the Cajuns' first trip to Huntsville,
Texas, since Feb. 24, 1982 – a 7-6 loss to the Bearkats.
Louisiana-Lafayette
starting pitcher Brandt Sanders (0-0) went 3 2/3 innings,
allowing six runs on six hits with one strikeout while
walking two batters. Senior Jered Salazar came on in relief
of Sanders, pitching two innings, scattering five hits with
one strikeout. Kraig Schambough went 1 1/3 innings, striking
out three batters.
Sam Houston State
starting pitcher Zach Duncan (0-0) went five innings,
allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
Adam Massiatte led the
Cajuns with two hits, going 2-for-3. Phillip Hawke went
1-for-2 with a home run and two runs scored.
Kolin Hatfield led the
Bearkats, going 2-for-3 with two homeruns and five RBI.
Senior centerfielder
John Coker led off the game with a towering solo homerun
over the left centerfield wall to give the Cajuns a 1-0 lead
in the top of the first. It was the first homerun of the
season the Cajuns. The Bearkats responded with a solo
homerun from second baseman Isaias Garcia, tying the game
1-1.
In the bottom of the
second, Sanders walked Karl Krailo and Jose Salazar. Adam
Perry followed with a single up the middle to load the bases
for the Bearkats with nobody out. Hatfield then cleared the
bases with a grand slam over the left field fence to give
SHSU a 5-1 lead. Sanders got out of the inning, however,
retiring the next three Bearkat batters.
With two outs in the
fourth inning, Hawke sent his first homerun of the season
over the right centerfield fence, to cut the Bearkats' lead
to 5-2. In the bottom half of the inning, the Bearkats
increased their lead back to four, 6-2, with Hatfield's
second homerun of the afternoon.
In the fifth, the
Cajuns threatened with runners on first and second, but were
unable to push any runs across the plate, keeping SHSU's
lead at 6-2.
The Cajuns threatened
again in the subsequent inning. After SHSU pitcher Jesse
Marshall loaded the bases, he was relieved by Robert Manuel.
Josh Landry and Hawke each drew a walk and John McCarthy hit
a single to right to load the bases for the Cajuns. Micah Cockrell hit a shot to SHSU first baseman John Stone, who
was unable to handle it. Cockrell reached on a fielder's
choice, as McCarthy advanced to second on a Stone throwing
error. Landry and Hawke both scored on the play to trim
SHSU's lead to 6-4. Massiatte grounded out to end the sixth
inning for the Cajuns.
Salazar allowed two
base runners in the bottom of the sixth, before being
relieved by Schambough with two outs. Schambough got out of
the jam, striking out Krailo to end the inning.
