Hawke's Two-Run Homerun Enough to Give Black 7-1 Fan Day Victory
Black added five more runs in the sixth to preserve the victory

Saturday, January 29, 2005

LAFAYETTE – Senior first baseman Phillip Hawke's two-run homerun to left field in the top of the first inning was enough as the Black team added five more runs in the sixth to take a 7-1 victory in the Fan Day Red-Black scrimmage Saturday.

Black starting pitcher Austin Faught earned the win, while Red starting pitcher Brandt Sanders received the loss.

Black shortstop Jameson Parker led the first inning off with a single through the right side. Justin Merendino and John McCarthy both followed with fly outs. Parker then stole second, before Hawke gave Black a quick 2-0 lead after a two-run homerun to left field off Sanders. Designated hitter Jonathan Lucroy grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.

The bottom of the first inning was highlighted by three defensive stops by Parker. Josh Landry, Adam Massiatte and Micah Cockrell grounded out in order to Parker to preserve Black's 2-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Matt Hicks grounded to third for the first out. Ray Dees followed with a single to shallow center field. Red pitcher Jered Salazar retired Justin Morgan and Matt Bounds to end the inning.

Black pitching held the Red team to just four hits through the first three innings of play.

In the top of the third, centerfielder Cody Martin struck out to lead off the frame. Then, former Ragin' Cajuns centerfielder and current New York Mets minor league outfielder Corey Coles grounded out for the second out. Parker grounded out to end the inning.

In the bottom frame, Devon Bourque sent a single up the middle past Black pitcher Hunter Moody. Designated hitter Geoff Craig struck out looking for the first out. Similar to the top frame, former Ragin' Cajuns third baseman and current New York Mets minor leaguer Chase Lambin made a Fan Day plate appearance. Unlike Coles, Lambin hit a looping single over the head of Hawke and advanced to second on McCarthy's throw. Bourque advanced to third on the play. Bourque was then thrown out at home on a fielder's choice by Landry for the second out. Massiatte struck out to end the third inning.

After Black's two-run first inning, Red's pitching held the Black team scoreless until the sixth inning.

Cockrell and Morris each singled to right field for the Red team to lead off the bottom half of the fourth. Tatford went down singing for the first out, and then Preciado sent a deep shot to center field that was caught by a diving Cody Martin scoring Cockrell. Guerrero popped out to end the inning.

Casbon drew a lead-off walk to begin the bottom half of the fifth. Bourque flew out to center for the first out. Black pitcher Ken Pokryfke retired the next two batters to end the fifth.

Black added five more runs in the top of the sixth to preserve the 7-1 victory.

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns begin the 2005 season when they host Louisiana Tech in a three-game weekend series, beginning Friday, Feb. 11. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
