What a Difference a Year Makes
Last
season, Louisiana-Lafayette belted out only 43 homeruns
in 60 games...This season, after only 31 games, the
Cajuns have matched last season's round-tripper total.
Junior Dallas Morris leads the offensive charge with 10
homeruns and Phillip Hawke is second with nine.
Break Out the Brooms
UL
Lafayette swept their first home Sun Belt Conference
series in two seasons against New Mexico State over the
weekend...It was the first SBC sweep for the Cajuns in
nearly a year and the first home SBC sweep since 2002
when the Cajuns swept New Mexico State.
Double Up
The
Cajuns this season have posted eight double-digit run
games, winning all of them...In 19 double-digit hit
games, the Cajuns have posted an impressive 16-3
mark...UL Lafayette has had double-digit hit games in
six of their last seven Sun Belt Conference games.
Offense = Dallas Morris
Junior
third baseman Dallas Morris continued his career year
with a 10-for-17 performance in four games last
week...Morris cranked out three homeruns and knocked in
six RBIs for the Cajuns...During Saturday's doubleheader
with NMSU, Morris hit for the cycle in four consecutive
at bats...Morris leads the team with a .389 average, 10
homeruns and 39 RBIs.
Robe Watch
UL
Lafayette head coach Tony Robichaux is 18 wins away from
600 career coaching victories. Robichaux is 582-381 in
16-plus seasons.
Ding-Dong, That Ball is Gone!
19.
That is the number Phillip Hawke and Dallas Morris have
the sights set on...That is the record for most homeruns
hit in a single season in UL Lafayette history...The
record is held by David King (1989) and David Alvis
(1985)...Hawke enters tonight's game with nine
round-trippers...Morris is half-way to the record with
10 homers.
Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz. Oh, What a Relief Kraig Schambough Is.
Senior
pitcher and Carencro native Kraig Schambough is in a
word - automatic...In 12 appearances this season,
Schambough has posted a 5-1 record with two saves and a
4.12 ERA...In Wednesday night's 5-4, 11-inning Cajuns
victory, Schambough was the victor, pitching 1.2 innings
of scoreless and hitless relief...Schambough delivered a
save in game two of Saturday's twinbill with NMSU.
The Series
Tonight's meeting marks the 130th matchup in the
series...The Cajuns hold a commanding 72-57 advantage
over the Cowboys...Last season, the Cowboys swept the
season series two games to none...Tony Robichaux is 9-11
against his alma mater and former club.
Home, Sweet Home
UL
Lafayette has played 22 games within the friendly
confines of M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field...And, how sweet it
has been...Already, the Cajuns are 19-3, three more wins
than they had all of 2003 at home (16-13)...Saturday's
night cap of the twinight doubleheader with New Mexico
State was the Cajuns' 600th victory at the "Tigue"...UL
600-230-1 (.723) all-time at Moore Field.
This Time Last Year
Tony Robichaux's
2004 club have caught fire of late and are 22-9 overall
and in first place in the Sun Belt Conference...This
time last year, Robichaux's club was a dismal
9-22...From there on, the Cajuns came within inches
(literally) of taking the SBC Regular Season crown.
Automatic
Down South(land)
Red or Blue?
What a PREAU
Senior outfielder
Kevin Preau entered this season with only two homeruns
to his credit (both coming at UNO's Privateer Park last
season)...On Wednesday, Preau hit his first career home
run at Moore Field and hit his second in game one of
Saturday's doubleheader...Preau is fifth on the team in
batting average (.319) and seventh in hits (22).
Merendi-NEAUX
3-4-6-5
First base, second base, shortstop, and third base...Phillip Hawke, Justin Merendino, Micah Cockrell, and Dallas Morris...These four have combined for 27 of the team's 43 homeruns and have driven in 115 runs in 31 runs thus far...Combined, the foursome are batting .342 and have scored 103 times...That's 41 percent of the Cajuns run total for the season.
