SAN MARCOS, TX- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns looked to avenge the 6-4 series-opening loss at the hands of the Texas State Bobcats Friday afternoon at Bobcat Field in San Marcos, Texas. The team would have their wish granted. Louisiana-Lafayette shot down the Bobcats 6-3 and improved their season record to 2-1.
A three run third would prove clutch for the Cajuns who batted around during their turn en route to claiming game two in the three-game set against Texas State.
Kraig Schambough picked up his first win of the season going five innings giving up five hits and only one run while recording one strikeout.
Josh Kohrs came in to record his first save of the year giving up two runs through four innings while fanning six.
Brian Hurley was stamped with the loss for Texas State as the Bobcats fell to 7-3 on their season.
Leadoff hitter John Coker was hit by Brian Hurley's first offering of the game and stole second. Catcher Ryan Core turned on a 3-1 pitch and hit it down the left field line for a double scoring Coker. Micah Cockrell, hitting in the five spot in the lineup, doubled into the left center field gap to bring Core around to score the second run of the first giving the Cajuns the early 2-0 lead.
Kraig Schambough would retire the first three of the Bobcats batting order in the bottom of the first.
In his next turn at the plate, in the top of the third, Coker was again plunked by Hurley and advanced to second on a passed ball. Justin Merendino drew a walk and Coker stole his fouth base of the season on the Bobcats pitcher. Rhett Buras would double to left center to bring around Coker and Merendino to increase the Cajuns lead 4-0. Core came up next and knocked a single into left to advance the baserunner to third. A pair of fielder's choices in the inning would bring up Philip Hawke who walked to load the bases with two outs. Jason Rodriguez would single to bring Core in standing for a 5-0 Cajuns advantage.
Bobcats reliever Chris Hill walked the bases loaded in the fifth but escaped the inning unscathed on a routine fly ball hit to center.
Texas State would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Schambough surrendered a single to Evan Tierce scoring Designated hitter Tony Chavez. The Cajuns would get out of a bases-loaded jam on a fly ball out to center.
Louisiana-Lafayette would get one more in the sixth. With one gone, Merendino doubled down the left field line and Buras came through again, this time with a single to plate the sixth run of the game for the Cajuns.
The Bobcats would add a run Richard Martinez drew a free pass to open the bottom of the eighth for Texas State and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Mark Cooper brought him around to score on his sixth hit of the series pulling Texas State to within four.
Bobcats shortstop Dominic Ramos would double off the wall with two gone in the bottom of the ninth and came around to score on a single off the bat of Tierce; but Kohrs would hang on to preserve the win for the Cajuns.
The first pitch of the final game of this weekend's series is set for tomorrow at 1pm.
