LAFAYETTE-As
was the case for the last two seasons, Louisiana's Ragin'
Cajuns used inspiring performances from their seniors to
propel the team to victory, as UL Lafayette defeated New
Mexico State 67-51 on Thursday night at Earl K. Long
Gym.
Sharee Glenn scored 19 points, including a 5-of-9 spot
from behind the
arc and added four assists, while Tiffany Washington
added 17 points, nine rebounds and a pair of assists,
blocks and steals.
The Cajuns carried a large 16-point lead into the second
half thanks to 10 three-point baskets in the opening
frame.
Washington converted in the paint off an Anna Petrakova
pass to extend
the Cajuns lead to 50-29 with 14:50 to play.
The Aggies cut into the Cajuns lead in the next six
minutes, but barely. Petrakova's free throw gave the
hosts a 57-37 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining
in the game.
A cold streak by the Cajuns allowed the Aggies to creep
closer. An 11-1 run by New Mexico State closed the gap
to 57-46 with 6:15 to play.
Washington ended the Cajuns scoreless streak at 5:01
with a
three-pointer. Good defense and a basket by Petrakova
upped the hosts
lead to 62-46 with 4:30 showing on the clock.
UL Lafayette continued to play great defense, holding
the Aggies to only
three free throws over a 6:03 span to put a stranglehold
on victory.
Petrakova led all players with 19 points and 12
rebounds, her eleventh
double-double of the season. Coming off a season-low 23
percent
shooting performance, the Cajuns shot 49 percent from
the floor and 46
percent from three-point territory.
The win gives the Cajuns 13 on the season, which is the
most in a season since 1987-88, a span of 16 seasons.
Head coach J. Kelley Hall's 21 career wins are the
fifth-most in school history.
The Aggies saw an early 6-2 lead disappear with a
barrage of Cajuns
three-pointers. Bernette Tolston Glenn, Washington and
Petrakova all
buried buckets from long distance to give the Cajuns a
14-8 advantage
with 13:21 to play in the first half.
The Cajuns kept dropping bombs over the next eight
minutes. Petrakova, Washington, Glenn and Tolston all
nailed their second triple to push the Cajuns lead to
28-18 at the 5:30 mark.
Glenn knocked home two more three's and added a jumper
at the buzzer to put the Cajuns up 39-23 at the half.
