NEW
ORLEANS-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns completed the
season sweep of New Orleans following a 61-51 victory
over the Privateers on Saturday afternoon in the Big
Easy.
The sweep is the first for UL Lafayette (12-10, 6-5)
over New Orleans (8-14, 4-7) since both schools have
been members of the Sun Belt Conference.
A 6-0 run to begin the second half gave the Cajuns a
short-lived 27-23 lead. UNO came back to take a 31-29
lead, but UL Lafayette came back with a 10-0 run to take
a 39-31 lead.
A three-point play by Anna Petrakova, five points by
Morgan Mayon and two from the line by Sharee Glenn
contributed to the game-breaking run that propelled the
Cajuns to their eight-point lead.
UNO started to foul the Cajuns with 11:35 remaining. UL
Lafayette hit eight at the stripe and got two baskets in
the paint from Petrakova leading to a 51-38 Cajuns
advantage.
The Cajuns continued to play defense, holding the
Privateers scoreless until Joevone Markey hit a jumper
at the 4:03 mark. The UNO scoreless streak lasted 5:25,
over which the Cajuns outscored UNO 10-3.
Following Markey's basket, Petrakova hit two more from
the line to give UL Lafayette a 56-42 edge with 3:42 on
the clock.
Neither team would score over the next 2:10, until
Michelle Simmons closed UNO's deficit to 56-44 with 1:32
remaining in the game. Following a Cajuns turnover,
Markey hit a jumper to cut the Cajuns lead to 56-46.
UL Lafayette ran 22 seconds off of the clock before
Markey fouled Glenn.
Glenn hit two free throws with 52 ticks left and another
with 39 seconds
showing.
Petrakova added two more free throws at the 27 second
mark to give UL
Lafayette a commanding 61-48 lead.
Petrakova led all players with 25 points. The junior
center added seven
rebounds, four blocks, two steals and an assist.
Tiffany Washington
recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
It marked
Washington's third straight game with a double-dip and
her sixth of the
season.
Despite a poor shooting first half (8-33, 24.2%), the
Cajuns trailed by just
two points.
A closely contested opening ten minutes saw the score
tied at 10-10.
Monique Taylor converted a pair of baskets for UNO to
give the Privateers a 14-10 lead.
Petrakova came back with her first bucket from the
field, a three-pointer,
and two free throws to give the Cajuns back the lead,
15-14, with 6:27 to
play in the opening half.
A 9-2 Privateers run gave the hosts a 23-17 lead with
2:13 remaining, but
the Cajuns came back to close the half with baskets from
Washington and Petrakova to finish the half down two,
23-21.
