MOBILE, Ala.-For
the second straight season in Mobile, Louisiana's Ragin'
Cajuns blew a large second-half lead, falling to South
Alabama.
On Thursday, the Cajuns led 44-35 with 7:34 remaining in
the game only to be defeated 52-49. Last season, the
Jaguars topped the Cajuns 55-51 even though the Cajuns
led 39-23 with 10:17 remaining in the game.
Trailing by nine, the Jaguars Katrina Martello went on
an 8-2 run against
the Cajuns to cut the UL Lafayette lead to 46-43 with
3:41 remaining in
the game. Genevieve Delk and Sarah Carter hit
back-to-back three-pointers, the later coming at 1:33,
to give USA a 49-46 lead.
Donyel Wheeler hit one free throw with 17.8 remaining to
put USA up four, but Sharee Glenn connected with a
three-pointer in the corner with 6.9 seconds to play to
bring the Cajuns to within one-point.
Glenn's basket was the Cajuns first from the field for
the Cajuns in a 7:27
span.
Carter made two free throws to give USA a 52-49 lead
with 4.4 ticks left.
Bernette Tolston had a gook look at the tying
three-pointer, but the shot
fell short.
Anna Petrakova led the Cajuns with 16 points. Tiffany Washington scored 13 points and finished with a
game-high 15 rebounds. Glenn added 13 points and six
rebounds.
The hosts came out of the locker room with an extra step
that the Cajuns did not have. Two quick Jaguars baskets
gave USA a 24-22 lead.
The Cajuns came back with a 7-0 run prompted by a basket
from Washington. Two free throws by Glenn preceded a
three-pointer from the top of the key by Petrakova. The
run gave the Cajuns a 29-24 lead.
USA came back to tie the game at 29-29, but Glenn hit
two more free throws and Petrakova converted underneath
to push the Cajuns lead up to 33-29.
South Alabama then used a 6-0 spurt to take back the
lead, 35-33, with 11:47 left in the game.
Washington
hit a three-pointer, her second of the game, to start an
11-0 UL Lafayette run. Washington followed with a pair
from the stripe, before a jumper by Glenn. Washington's
offensive board and basket then gave the Cajuns a
six-point cushion. Petrakova nailed her second three of
the game to push the Cajuns lead to 44-35 with 7:34
remaining.
Both schools are two of the best defensive teams in the
conference as
evidence by poor shooting totals on both sides. The
Cajuns shot just 28.6 percent and USA finished with a
31.3 clip.
The Jaguars held an 11-7 lead after a see-saw beginning
to the game.
Strong rebounding helped UL Lafayette use a 10-0 run to
build a 17-11 edge. Washington started the burst with a
free throw and then a three-pointer. Glenn's basket gave
the Cajuns a 13-11 lead at the 12:48 mark, the Cajuns
first lead of the game. Tolston followed with an
offensive rebound and put back before Petrakova closed
the run with a jumper.
The Cajuns held their lead through the end of the half
thanks to tough
defense. Neither team shot well, as each traded two
baskets apiece over the next 6:34. After a scoreless
drought of 2:28, Whitney Woodard's jumper cut the Cajuns
lead to 21-17 with 2:35 to go in the first half.
After one free throw by Glenn, Martello hit the final
basket of the half,
closing the margin between the teams to three points.
