Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team found out how hard it is – with starting point guard Orien Greene leaving the game during the nine-minute mark of the opening half after being kneed in his lower right leg. Greene was held out the remainder of the contest as a precautionary measure and the injury appears to be minor.
Greene entered the contest averaging 14.7 points per game and just over five assists per outing.
The Cajuns offense felt the effects of Greene's absence as No. 2 Kansas used a 26-10 run over the final nine-plus minutes of the opening half to break open a 28-12 game and take a 54-22 lead at intermission.
Kansas shot 58 percent for the contest (34-of-59), made 12 three-point field goals and received 40 points combined from Keith Langford and J.R. Giddens en route to a 96-51 victory here Saturday evening at Allen Fieldhouse.
The Cajuns received a team-high 12 points from both Brian Hamilton and Tiras Wade and shot just 32 percent from the floor (19-of-59) - not a good percentage when your second-leading scorer is on the bench.
Hamilton grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds while Wade led the Cajuns in scoring for the seventh time in as many games.
KU (6-0) shot 61 percent from the floor in the opening half and made eight 3-point field goals in building a 32-point edge at intermission.
The Cajuns (3-4) made just eight field goals in the first stanza and never seemed to find a rhythm with Greene missing. UL Lafayette had just three assists at intermission and ended the game with just seven to KU's 22.
Louisiana-Lafayette stayed within three points through the first three minutes of the game by answering each KU score with one of its own after the Jayhawks opened the game by scoring the first five points.
A basket by Wade at 17:00 pulled the Cajuns within three points, 9-6. KU capitalized off of Cajuns turnovers on the next couple of possessions to roll off 10 unanswered points to open a 19-6 lead at 15:38.
UL Lafayette worked the lead back into single digits over the next 30 seconds.
Greene, registered his only basket of the evening, a three-pointer in the right corner at 15:16, to close the margin to 19-9. After a KU turnover on a Dwayne Mitchell steal it was Greene with a freebie on the other end to make it 19-10 through five minutes of action.
Two possessions later, Wayne Simien hit a turnaround jumper that gave KU its double-digit lead back. Louisiana-Lafayette closed within 11 points, 23-12 at 13:31 on a basket by Wade.
After Greene departed the game with the Jayhawks on top 28-12, the Cajuns were held to just six points over the next eight minutes as KU opened a 50-18 lead at 1:50.
The Cajuns shooting woes continued in the first seven-plus minutes of the second half making just two field goals. KU used a 13-5 run during that span that stretched the lead to 40 points, 67-27 at 12:35 of the second half.
The Jayhawks led by as many as 48 points when a three-pointer from Jeff Hawkins made it 96-48 with 30 seconds left in the contest.
Louisiana-Lafayette returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 15 as the Ragin' Cajuns visit No. 12 North Carolina State (7-0) for a 9 p.m. (EST) matchup at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C.
