White Team Takes
2-1 Lead Behind Strong Pitching
Fall World Series will
resume play on Saturday, beginning at 12 p.m.
LAFAYETTE – A three-run fourth inning and a strong pitching performance by senior Kevin Ardoin propelled the White team to a 3-1 victory in game three of the Red-White Fall World Series here Thursday night at Moore Field. The White team now leads the series 2-1.
Ardoin and Red starting pitcher Ian Pecoraro each held the opposition to just one hit during the first three innings.
Both teams exchanged runs in the fourth inning. In the top half of the fourth, Josh Landry led off with a single to left field for the Red team. Landry was later thrown out attempting to steal second base. Adam Massiatte then doubled to right center. With two outs, Dallas Morris sent an RBI single up the middle to score Massiatte giving Red a 1-0 lead. Jefferies Tatford followed with a single up the middle, advancing Morris to second. Morris was then thrown out at third on a Ray Dees fielder's choice to end the inning.
From there, the White team would dominate the game en route to the victory.
In the bottom frame, Leonard Guerrero reached on a fielding error by Jameson Parker. Alex Preciado followed with a single to right field. After a Matt Casbon walk, Matt Hicks hit a sacrifice fly to right field, which scored Guerrero to tie the game. A throwing error by Phillip Hawke later scored Casbon and Preciado to give White a 3-1 advantage. Justin Merendino grounded out to end the inning.
Over the last five innings, both teams combined for seven hits. The Red team committed three errors, while the White team committed only one error.
Ardoin received the win, pitching six complete innings. Ardoin allowed one run on six hits with four strikeouts. Hunter Moody came on in relief, pitching 2 1/3 nearly-perfect innings of work, allowing only one hit. Micah Cockrell earned the save, finishing the game for the White team to retire the two of the last three Red batters.
Pecoraro got the loss for the Red team, going 3 2/3 innings. Pecoraro allowed three runs – all unearned – on two hits, while striking out four batters.
The annual Red-White Fall World Series will resume Saturday with game four beginning at 12 p.m., while game five will follow 30 minutes after the completion of the first game.
