Beaumont, TX- In a game they never trailed, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns shook off the little dust that they had in a 68-44 victory over Lamar on Tuesday night in Beaumont, Texas. Apparently, a 16 day lay-off didn't faze the Cajuns as they dominated the Lady Cardinals. Louisiana-Lafayette held the hosts to 28.8 percent shooting, while shooting a season-high 50 percent from the floor. Not even no. 19 TCU shot as well against the Lady Cardinals defense back on Dec. 29. The visitors won the rebounding margin 44-27, had more assists 17-7 and more blocks 7-2. A slow beginning to the second half benefited the Cajuns. Each team scored only two points in the first five minutes to help the Cajuns hold their 14-point edge. Double-teamed for the entire first half, an offensive rebound and put-back quietly gave Anna Petrakova 10 points and 11 rebounds at the 13:31 mark of the second half, helping the Cajuns to a 44-29 lead. As Lamar's defense spread, Petrakova found more opportunities and capitalized later in the half to lead the Cajuns with 24 points and 13 rebounds, her sixth double-double of the season. The Cajuns lead grew to 17 points, 50-33, before the Lady Cardinals responded. The hosts used a 7-0 run to cut the Cajuns lead to 50-40 with 9:39 left in the game. UL Lafayette fought back with two baskets by Petrakova and one from Sharee Glenn to take a 56-40 lead at the 7:23 mark. Audrea Samuel converted for LU, but Tiffany Washington scored her only basket of the game and Glenn added a lay-up to push the Cajuns lead to 60-44 with 5:27 remaining. Petrakova's 24 points were nearly equaled by Glenn's 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting and a perfect 6-of-6 from the line. Glenn added six rebounds and four assists. Bernette Tolston added 12 points and five rebounds. Washington scored only two points, but contributed with 10 rebounds. Morgan Mayon chipped-in five points and six assists in 13 minutes. The Cajuns started the contest on a 13-2 run in the first 14:14. Three baskets from Lamar were answered by three-pointers from Mayon and Tolston. Glenn followed with a basket, before another triple by Tolston, her fourth. A steal and lay-up by Mayon, and a basket from Petrakova gave the Cajuns a 28-8 edge with 7:23 remaining in the first half. The Cajuns recorded just one basket from the floor the rest of the half, a lay-up by Glenn with 1:57 to play, but made eight-of-nine free throws over the final five minutes. A three-pointer by Rashekii Howard with 16 ticks left in the opening frame closed the Lady Cardinals to within 36-24, but a pair from the stripe by Petrakova with 1.1 seconds showing gave the Cajuns a 38-24 lead at the break. |
