Homeruns Power Cajuns To 12-5 Over Lamar

LAFAYETTE- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team defeats the 29th ranked Lamar Cardinals by a score of 12-5 here at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field. The Cajuns take both games against the Cardinals this season and improve to 15-24 overall.
UL Lafayette drove in seven of its 12 runs with the long ball. Outfielder Bryan Sneed had two homeruns on the night, while first baseman Phillip Hawke and catcher Ryan Core both added one homerun each. Sneed, Hawke, and Core combined to drive in 11 of the team's 12 runs on the night.
The Cajuns opened the scoring in the first inning with a Bryan Sneed two run shot over the left field wall. Ryan Core followed Sneed's homerun with a solo-shot to right field to give the Cajuns a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Lamar starting pitcher Kevin Poenitzsch (0-2) left the game with one-out in the first inning after hitting Cajun right fielder Kevin Preau with a pitch. Josh Landry came in to pinch run after Preau was injured on the pitch. Poeenitzsch gave up three runs in just 1/3 of an inning pitched and suffered the loss.
The Cardinals picked up two runs in the third inning on a two-out Cajun infield error to cut the deficit to 3-2. Lamar was never able to get any closer as the Cajuns scored two more runs in the bottom half of the inning on a single by Phillip Hawke that scored two runs.
UL Lafayette scored three more runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-2 lead. Bryan Sneed and Ryan Core both had RBI hits in the inning. Core scored the third run of the inning on a groundball error by the Cardinal shortstop off the bat of Brad Saloom.
Bryan Sneed hit his second homerun of the game with two outs and no one on base in the fifth inning to make it 9-2 Cajuns. Lamar added a run in the top half of the sixth inning on a RBI double by John Allen, but the Cajuns scored three more runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 12-3 lead. Phillip Hawke drove in all three runs on a deep homerun over the right field wall. The homerun was Hawke's fifth of the year and gave him five RBI's on the night. Hawke leads the Cajuns with 30 runs driven in on the year.
Lamar added two runs against UL Lafayette in the eighth inning to make the final margin 12-5. Matt Gowan and Blake Justice picked up the RBI's for the Cardinals in the inning. Kraig Schambough relieved Thad Montgomery with no outs in the inning and the bases loaded. Schambough retired the next six batters to finish the game on the mound for the Cajuns.
Louisiana-Lafayette freshman pitcher Jeff Martinez (1-0) picked up his first career win in his first start of the season after pitching four innings and allowing no earned runs (two unearned) on just two Cardinal hits. Martinez was scheduled to pitch just four innings before the game and was replaced by Thad Montgomery to open the fifth inning.
The Cajun bats continued their offensive surge with a total of 14 hits on the night. UL Lafayette has now had eight straight games with ten or more hits. Bryan Sneed, Phillip Hawke, and Ryan Core all had three hits each on the night to lead the Cajuns.
Louisiana-Lafayette improves to 15-24 overall and will next host first place Florida International in a crucial Sun Belt conference series this weekend. Game one will start at 6:35 pm Friday night here at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field. Friday's game will be televised live on KLAF TV-17 in Lafayette.
