NEW ORLEANS - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team falls to in-state rival Tulane 11-4 here at Turchin Field in New Orleans. The Cajuns lose their fourth straight as Tulane pounds out 17 hits against the Cajun pitching staff.

Tulane opened the game against Ragin' Cajuns starter Jered Salazar scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. First baseman Michael Aubrey and right fielder Brian Bogusevic drove in runs for the Green Wave.

UL Lafayette junior leftfielder Corey Coles led off for the Cajuns in the second inning with an infield single off Tulane starter Matt Goebel. Coles advanced to second on a Matt Levering base hit and advanced to third to load the bases when second baseman Sport Voorhies hit another infield single down the third base line. Coles scored the first run of the game for the Cajuns when the Tulane third baseman threw wide to first base on attempting to complete an inning ending double play.

With Tulane leading 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning Green Wave shortstop Tony Giarratano hit a two-run homerun over the centerfield wall to give his team a three run lead after two complete innings.

Ragin' Cajuns first baseman Phillip Hawke followed a Bryan Sneed leadoff walk with a towering 2-run shot over the right field wall to open the third inning. Hawke's third homerun of the season put the Cajuns within one run at 4-3.

Louisiana-Lafayette junior starter Jered Salazar lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. Tulane scored the fifth run off Salazar after Tulane leadoff hitter Jonny Kaplan singled up the middle with two outs and stole second in the fourth inning. Kaplan scored off Cajun reliever Kraig Schambough on a Tony Giarratano double to left field.

Tulane freshman starter Matt Goebel left the game after holding the Cajuns to three runs (two earned) through five innings.

The Cajuns added a run off Tulane reliever Tyler Kimmons on a Phillip Hawke single scoring Josh Landry from third base making it a 6-4 ballgame.

Green Wave Pre-Season All-American Michael Aubrey led off the bottom half of the seventh inning with a solo-shot over the right field wall. Tulane added another run off Schambough in the seventh on a RBI double by catcher Brian Bogusevic making the score 7-4 Tulane.

Aubrey put the game away for Tulane with his second homerun of the game off Cajun reliever Kevin Ardoin in the bottom of the eighth inning. Aubrey's three run homerun gave him 5 RBI on the night. Tulane picked up another run against Ardoin to make the final score 11-4.

Jered Salazar (1-3) suffers the loss for UL Lafayette and freshman Matt Goebel (2-0) gets the win for the Green Wave.

UL Lafayette falls to 5-11 on the season and has now lost four straight games. The Cajuns will try to snap the four-game skid when they host the 3rd Mardi Gras Ball at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field. UL Lafayette will open up with Ohio State this Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
