NEW ORLEANS- For the second straight game, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns blew a halftime lead in dropping a 63-47 decision to Sun Belt rival New Orleans.
The Cajuns led by two at the half before a big Privateers run in the first five minutes of the second frame helped UNO take control of the game.
Trailing 21-20, UNO started to trap the Cajuns early in the second half, disrupting the UL Lafayette offense and kick starting the Privateers attack.
UNO used an 11-2 run to take an eight-point lead, 31-23. Sarah Richey's basket at 14:45 marked the Cajuns first field goal of the second half and ended the Privateers run.
Richey fouled out with 10:51 remaining and head coach J. Kelley Hall received a technical foul, giving UNO four free throws. The Privateers connected on two from the stripe to extend their lead to 42-30.
UL Lafayette fought back with a 9-2 run to close within five, 44-39, with seven minutes remaining. The Cajuns could not get any closer, as UNO responded with consecutive baskets from Jeannette Jimenez to up their lead to nine.
Monique Taylor led all players with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Jimenez scored 15 points, all in the paint, in just 21 minutes.
Louisiana-Lafayette shot only 27.5 percent in the game, including a 1-for-15 performance on three-point shots.
Anna Petrakova led the Cajuns with 12 points. Brooke Williams chipped in nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
A lethargic, yet competitive first half saw poor shooting from both clubs. There were seven lead changes, while the score was tied on eight different occasions.
The Cajuns did not play particularly well in the game's initial five minutes but saw the score tied at 6-6.
Good defense made-up for a lack of offense, as neither team could find their rhythm with the basketball. The score remained tied, 13-13, with 8:19 left in the half.
The score was still knotted, 18-18, with only one minute to play in the half, until a lay-up by Williams gave the Cajuns a 20-18 lead entering the locker room.
The Cajuns will enjoy the week off, before traveling to New Mexico State on Saturday, Feb. 15 for a 6pm (CT) televised game against the Aggies.
