Cajuns Lose Heartbreaker at Nebraska, Drop to 3-3

LINCOLN, Neb.-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns dropped a
heartbreaking 61-59 decision to the Nebraska Huskers on
Sunday afternoon.
Bernette Tolston delivered a three-pointer at the 3:18
mark to propel the
Cajuns to a 59-55 lead. The basket would be last of the
game for the Cajuns as Nebraska scored six unanswered
points to win the contest.
A free throw, then a lay-up and then a three-pointer
from Margaret Richards helped the hosts take a 61-59
lead with 52 seconds left.
A steal by Tiffany Washington with seven seconds
remaining gave the Cajuns back the ball. Following a
timeout, the Cajuns ran a sideline inbounds play for
Anna Petrakova. Petrakova made a quick move with the
ball and went up for the game tying lay-up. Alleged
contact on the play was not called and time ran out on
UL Lafayette.
The Cajuns shot 10 free throws, none in the second half,
compared to 15 from the stripe for the hosts.
Petrakova was strong all game, leading the Cajuns with
23 points, 14
rebounds, four blocks and two steals. Tolston added 11
points as the only other Cajun in double figures.
Down seven, two quick baskets to begin the second half
closed the Cajuns to a within a basket, 37-34.
The Huskers used a lay-up from Kea Cannon and a
three-pointer from Jina Johansen to extend their lead to
42-34.
The teams traded punches over the next eight minutes, as
the Huskers held a 53-48 lead with 8:32 left in the
game.
A lay-up from Washington brought the Cajuns back to
within three points, 53-50, with 7:10 remaining in the
game. Ashley Blanche then hit a jumper to close the gap
to one-point.
Tolston nailed a baseline jumper off of the dribble to
silence the Bob
Devaney Sports Center crowd, as the Cajuns took a 54-53
lead with 5:48 to play.
Nebraska retook the lead on a basket from Katie Morse,
55-54, with 4:34 remaining.
Petrakova answered with 4:15 on the clock to recapture
the edge for the
Cajuns, before Tolston's triple extended that edge to
four points.
Morse led NU with 15 points. Cannon chipped-in 13
points and 17 rebounds.
The Cajuns shot 42.9 percent, while holding Nebraska to
33.3 percent
shooting from the floor. The Huskers held the edge on
the boards 41-38,
including 17-10 on the offensive glass.
The Cajuns scored the first points of the game on a
three-pointer from
Washington, but then allowed the Huskers to go on an
11-0 run.
UL Lafayette's scoreless drought spanned almost five
minutes until Sharee Glenn hit a free throw to cut the
NU lead to 11-4.
The Huskers ran up seven more points before baskets by
Washington and Petrakova closed the visitors to within
18-8 with 11:00 left in the first
half.
The Cajuns cut the Huskers lead down to four points with
a 12-2 run covering a five minute span. Petrakova was
the story, scoring eight points, all of which came in
the paint.
Heather Kephart hit a three pointer for Nebraska on the
next trip down the floor and Cannon added a pair of free
throws in between another lay-up from Petrakova to give
the hosts a 37-20 lead at the half.
