Statistical Recap
STILLWATER, Okla. -
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns
dropped to 0-6 on the season following a 56-3 loss at
Oklahoma State on Saturday night in Stillwater, Okla.
Louisiana-Lafayette squandered four early opportunities in Oklahoma State territory, while the Cowboys made the plays they needed on four straight scoring drives in the second quarter en route to a big 28-3 lead at the half.
The Cajuns missed an opportunity to score on their opening possession. Eric Rekieta hit Fred Stamps on the first play of the game with a pass deep into OSU territory. The 49-yard gain preceded a third down completion to B.J. Crist which gave the visitors a first-and-ten at the OSU 23-yard line. A pass-for-loss, holding penalty and false start penalty pushed the Cajuns back 17 yards to the OSU 40. After Chester Johnson gained seven yards on a screen pass from Rekieta, Sean Comiskey's 50-yard field goal attempt landed wide right.
UL Lafayette then came away empty after marching 58 yards down to the OSU 20-yard line. Rekieta was intercepted at the five by Robert Jones.
The next play saw the Cajuns regain possession following a Pat Lamy fumble recovery at the OSU 18-yard line. Louisiana-Lafayette lost five yards on the series, however, Comiskey converted his 40-yard field goal attempt to silence the Boone Pickens Stadium crowd with a 3-0 Cajuns lead.
The Cajuns moved into OSU territory on their fourth straight drive, but stalled after Lawrence Johnson dropped a third down pass from Rekieta at the OSU 35-yard line. Grant Autrey's punt sailed into the end zone for a touchback.
The game turned quickly as the Cowboys responded with an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive capped by a one-yard touchdown run by Vernand Morency. The hosts took their first lead, 7-3, with 11:25 remaining in the second quarter.
A 16-yard punt return gave the Cowboys excellent field position to start their next drive. OSU traveled 45 yards in 1:35 to score on an 18-yard pass to D'Juan Woods from Josh Fields.
Morency put the hosts ahead 21-3 with a 68-yard dash late in the first half. The sophomore tailback found a seam up the middle and sprinted untouched into the end zone.
Darrent Williams followed with a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown with just 17 seconds remaining in the half to increase OSU's lead to 28-3.
Williams inflated the Cowboys lead in the third quarter with his second punt return for a touchdown. His 59-yard jaunt made the score 35-3 in favor of the hosts.
