Cajuns fall in 2nd consecutive conference game

LAFAYETTE, LA - For the second consecutive conference game, Louisiana-Lafayette had problems scoring, falling to South Alabama 62-37 on Thursday night.

The Cajuns shot 27.5 percent in the game and have now shot just 29.7 percent (30-101) in two Sun Belt games.

The Jaguars improve to 9-5 (2-0), while UL Lafayette falls to 3-9 (0-2).

After falling behind by 17 points at the half, the Cajuns opened the second half on a 10-2 run to cut the South Alabama lead to nine, 40-31, with 15 minutes remaining.

USA responded to the Cajuns run with a 12-0 outburst over the next seven minutes to take a 52-31 lead with eight minutes remaining.

The Cajuns managed only six points over the final 15 minutes.

USA's Taneisha Russell led all scorers with 20 points and added seven rebounds. Chelsea Bell posted 12 points and grabbed nine boards.

Charlotte Green and Sarah Richey each scored 10 points to lead the Cajuns. Anna Petrakova led all players with 10 rebounds. True freshman Ashley Blanche, making her first career start, scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds.

South Alabama hit their first six shots en route to an early 14-4 lead. USA continued to surge, hitting three straight three-pointers to up their lead to 23-8 with 12:34 remaining.

Russell scored 11 points in the first eight minutes, but was held in check for the rest of the half once Brooke Williams entered the game.

USA benefited from 52 percent shooting in the opening half to just 30 percent by the Cajuns. In addition, the Jaguars hit six-of-eight three-point attempts, compared to one-of-five by UL Lafayette.

The Cajuns host New Orleans on Saturday at 7pm at Earl K. Long Gym.
