BASEBALL'S SCHAMBOUGH RECEIVES SBC WEEKLY HONOR

LAFAYETTE -- Following easily his best weekend of the season, Louisiana-Lafayette freshman reliever Kraig Schambough has been named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week the league announced Monday.

Schambough, who redshirted last year, hurled 6 1/3 scoreless innings Sunday in leading the Cajuns to a crucial 4-3 SBC win over Western Kentucky. A native of nearby Carencro, Schambough allowed only two hits -- both singles -- and struck out seven while not allowing a WKU runner past first base.

The right-hander entered Sunday's game in the top of the third, with his squad behind 3-0. But UL Lafayette (32-16, 14-4 SBC) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth to hand Schambough his second win of 2002. He also threw 1 1/3 innings of scoreless work in the series opener Friday.

Schambough lowered his earned run average to 2.51 for the year and is holding opponents to a .193 batting average. He has 34 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings.
