GROS SOLID AGAIN IN CAJUN WIN
May 4, 2002
?LAFAYETTE Louisiana-Lafayette junior left-hander Andy Gros had another terrific outing, and the host-Cajuns took advantage of a struggling Western Kentucky defense en route to a 5-1 Sun Belt Conference triumph Saturday afternoon at "Tigue" Moore Field.
?Gros (8-3) struck out six and allowed only six hits in eight-plus innings. The 2000 Freshman All-American won his fourth straight SBC start. Offensively, meanwhile, sophomore outfielder Corey Coles went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Brad Saloom and Bryan Sneed each added RBIs.
?WKU (32-12, 12-4 SBC) committed three errors, which led to two unearned runs, as freshman left-hander J.C. Faircloth (5-2) got the loss. Junior outfielder David Lower provided all the Hilltopper offense with an eighth-inning solo home run. WKU catcher Kenneth Yaeger was the only Hilltopper with two hits.
?With the win, the Cajuns (31-16, 13-4 SBC) temporarily moved into first place in the SBC pending South Alabama's night game at New Mexico State.
?Like Friday's game, a 5-4 WKU victory, both offenses started slow. UL Lafayette finally got on the board in the third on Coles' sacrifice fly, which scored Dallas Morris. Saloom followed with a run-scoring double, plating Wilson who also had a double.
?In the sixth, the Cajuns broke it open on back-to-back WKU errors. After the Hilltoppers missed a shot at a double play, Cajun catcher Doug Vicknair hit a grounder right through the legs of WKU third baseman Taylor Townsend, allowing Saloom and Lloyd Ellis to score. The Cajuns added a final run in the seventh when Sneed plated Coles with an RBI double.
?Gros was in command from there. The Morgan City native allowed only four runners in scoring position before tiring a bit in the late innings. Freshman right-hander Kevin Ardoin relieved Gros in the ninth, and the Eunice product struck out all three hitters he faced in handing UL Lafayette its eighth SBC win in nine outings.
?The two teams will wrap up the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
