UALR HOLDS CAJUN OFFENSE IN TAKING SBC TILT April 13, 2002

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Arkansas-Little Rock infielder Adam Coleman's sacrifice fly in the 10th inning plated Brent Chapman, and the host-Trojans held Louisiana-Lafayette's bats in check to take a 3-2 Sun Belt Conference win Saturday afternoon at Curran Conway Field.

?UALR (16-20, 3-6 SBC) held the visiting Cajuns (23-13, 5-3 SBC) to just four hits and none after the seventh inning. The win was the Trojans' sixth in eight outings against Louisiana-Lafayette.

?Reliever Paul Speer (2-1) got the win for UALR, hurling three perfect innings with two strikeouts. Corey Coles (2-1) took the hard-luck loss for Louisiana-Lafayette, which dropped to 2-2 on its recent six-game road trip.

?The Trojans won the game despite leaving 12 men on base. But in the 10th, the Trojans' Derek Santangelo led off with a single. After Chapman pinch-ran for the catcher, Clay Pittullo laid down a bunt down the third-base line.

?Cajun third baseman Scott Carboni tried to get Chapman at second but was late. The ball got away from second baseman Justin Bourque – allowing Chapman to get to third.

?The Cajuns brought everyone in, but Coleman hit a line drive that sent Wilson too far back to prevent Chapman from tying the series at 1-1.

?Carboni was the only Cajun to get a hit in the first five innings. The Crowley senior opened the third with a double and advanced on Doug Vicknair's sacrifice. Carboni scored on a wild pitcher from UALR starter Aaron Carter.

?It was the only miscue, however, that Carter made. The soft-tossing southpaw surrendered just four hits in six innings and struck out one.

?The quiet Cajun bats spoiled another strong showing for Cajun left-hander Andy Gros. The junior worked into the ninth inning despite giving up 11 hits. Gros gave up only two runs, though, and struck out seven.

?The two teams will wrap up the three-game series with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday.
