CAJUNS RECEIVE SBC WEEKLY AWARDS; RANKED IN POLL...April 1, 2002

LAFAYETTE – Thanks to a strong 4-1 week, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun baseball team reaped some rewards Monday.

Cajun outfielder Bryan Sneed was named the Sun Belt Conference Hitter of the Week, while senior left-hander Justin Gabriel was tabbed as the league's Pitcher of the Week.

Sneed went 10-for-19 during the five-game stretch and belted two home runs while driving in six. His efforts helped the Cajuns take two out of three at nationally-ranked Florida International this past weekend. It marked the first time the Cajuns won a series in Miami.

Gabriel continued his brilliant season with a complete-game win Friday against the Golden Panthers. The 2000 All-American ran his record to 5-1 after giving up just eight hits and one run against the top-ranked hitting team in the SBC.

With the week's success, the Cajuns also leaped into the Baseball America Top 25 Poll. Louisiana-Lafayette is ranked No. 23, marking the second time the Cajuns have been ranked in a regular season poll this year.

Louisiana-Lafayette will be back in action Tuesday, hosting Lamar in a 6:30 p.m. contest at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
