CAJUNS NEED EXTRAS BUT BEAT TULANE

March 27, 2002

?NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun baseball team blew a three-run lead in the ninth, but the visitors battled back to score in the 10th en route to a 5-4 win over Tulane Wednesday night at Turchin Stadium.

?Cajun second baseman Justin Bourque plated Chad Verret with a two-out, RBI single in the top of the 10th, and Corey Coles made sure the Cajuns (18-9) wouldn't lose the lead again as Louisiana-Lafayette swept the season series against Tulane (13-14) for the second time in the last three years.

?Coles (2-0) put out the fire in the ninth, after the Green Wave scored three runs off Cajun reliever Kevin Ardoin. Louisiana-Lafayette built a 4-1 lead after scoring two runs in the fifth and another in the seventh.

?A solid outing from Cajun starter Jordy Tempet, followed by good relief efforts from Ken Brown and Andy Gros seemingly put the Cajuns in good shape. But the Green Wave battled back against the Cajuns' closer Ardoin.

?With two outs in the 10th, however, Verret worked a walk despite being behind in the count 0-2. Another walk to first baseman Phillip Hawke moved Verret into scoring position, and Bourque laced a single through the infield allowing the speedy Verret to score.

?Coles worked a perfect bottom frame to lift the Cajuns to their sixth win in seven outings. It also marked the Green Wave's sixth straight loss.

?Louisiana-Lafayette will now venture back into Sun Belt Conference play, visiting 24th-ranked Florida International in a three-game weekend series beginning Friday.
