CAJUNS GET ALL-AROUND EFFORT TO BEAT TIGERS...March 19, 2002

?LAFAYETTE – Louisiana-Lafayette junior left-hander Andy Gros got his first career shutout, and the host Cajuns exploded for 10 hits in cruising to a 7-0 win over 14th-ranked LSU Tuesday night at "Tigue" Moore Field.

?Gros, who recorded his first win in three meetings with LSU (14-9), scattered seven hits and struck out seven in winning his third decision in five outings. Right fielder Corey Coles highlighted the offense with a three-run home run, while Chase Lambin and Brad Saloom each tallied two hits and an RBI.

?LSU left-hander Jason Vargas (0-1) got the loss after giving up three hits and four runs in three innings of work. Chris Phillips paced the offense with two hits.

?The Cajuns (14-8) were never threatened in sweeping the two-game series between the schools for the first time under head coach Tony Robichaux. Louisiana-Lafayette plated a run in the first after Saloom laced a single past LSU second baseman Rocky Scelfo, which brought home Wilson who reached base on a Scelfo error.

?Louisiana-Lafayette scored in four of its first five at-bats, and Coles broke the game open in the third with a first-pitch, three-run shot off Vargas.

?The offense was more than enough for Gros, who hurled just his second career complete game. The Morgan City native, whose only other complete game was against South Carolina in the 2000 NCAA Super Regional, did not walk a hitter and allowed just four runners past first base.

?LSU did not get a runner to third all night.

?The Cajuns will open up Sun Belt Conference play this weekend, hosting UNO in a three-game set beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
