INDIANS RALLY LATE TO BEAT CAJUNS
Feb. 20, 2002
?LAFAYETTE Louisiana-Monroe erupted for eight runs in the ninth inning to overcome a four-run deficit in a 10-6 win over Louisiana-Lafayette Wednesday night at "Tigue" Moore Field.
?The Indians (3-2) had just one hit in the first eight innings but took advantage of four hits and two big Cajun errors in the ninth to take their second straight victory.
?Jeff Martinez (1-0) got the win in relief allowing just one hit in three innings of work in what seemed to be a mop-up role. But ULM got three hits, a walk and an RBI groundout off UL Lafayette reliever Jordy Templet (2-1) to cut the lead to 6-5 in the ninth.
?ULM pinch hitter Daniel Raymond tied the game on a sacrifice fly, and first baseman Ben Jones provided a clutch two-out, RBI single to give the Indians a lead. ULM then broke it open when Jack Scaggs' deep fly ball was dropped by Cajun center fielder Charles Redmond allowing three more runs to score and seal it.
?The Cajuns seemed primed for their fifth straight win after a remarkable effort by a quintet of Cajun hurlers. Starter Corey Coles struck out five in three innings, followed by a two-inning, five-strikeout performance by freshman right-hander Kevin Ardoin.
?After Donnie Bair worked a scoreless inning of relief, left-hander Andy Gros relieved Kraig Shambaugh in the seventh and worked 1 2/3 innings of perfect relief.
?The Cajuns got all their offense in the second and third innings, when senior shortstop Chase Lambin erased a 1-0 ULM lead with a two-run homer in the second. The Cajuns got another run on Coles' RBI single.
?Louisiana-Lafayette ended its scoring with three runs in the third keyed by catcher Mike Kabel's two-run double.
?Kabel and Lambin each had two hits and two RBIs, but the Cajuns got just two hits after the third.
