LAFAYETTE, LA - The ball could not bounce the Louisiana-Lafayette way on Saturday night en route to a twelfth consecutive Sun Belt Conference loss by way of a 54-41 defeat to New Mexico State.
The game was the conference opener for both the Cajuns (3-7) and Aggies (6-6).
After the teams played an even first half, NMSU pulled away midway through the second half. A 12-2 run gave the visitors a 50-39 edge with less than five minutes remaining in the contest.
Baskets were hard to come by for the Cajuns in the second half. After shooting just 33 percent in the first stanza, the Cajuns hit only seven baskets from the floor in the second frame, scoring only 17 points.
Jenia Dimitrova and Sinnamonn Garrett led NMSU with 11 points apiece, while Jenean Ford and Princess Moore added 10 points apiece. Dimitrova led all players with 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.
The Cajuns were led by 15 points from Anna Petrakova. Petrakova was one rebound shy of her third straight double-double. Sarah Richey added six points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
The Cajuns jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the game?s opening minutes, but the Aggies responded with a 14-4 run to take a 14-11 lead with eight minutes left in the first half.
Anna Petrakova?s ninth point closed the Cajuns to 14-13 but a three pointer by Jenia Dimitrova and a three-point play by Teri Jones extended New Mexico State?s lead to 20-13.
With the Aggies ahead 24-17, Cajuns head coach J. Kelley Hall was called for a technical foul. Mari Sanchez missed both free throws, which prompted a Cajuns 7-0 run to end the half tied.
