ARKANSAS-LITTLE ROCK HANDS CAJUNS' FIFTH STRAIGHT LOSS...May 4, 2001

LAFAYETTE – Like their fellow students, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun baseball team is mired in the middle of final exam week.

And, like those students, the Cajuns know that one bad test does not necessarily make for a bad semester. Louisiana-Lafayette dropped its fifth straight game Friday night, falling 5-3 to visiting Arkansas-Little Rock at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

"We've got to step up and look this straight in the face and start getting it done," Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux said. "Again, we didn't score until the sixth inning. We've got to come out and compete at the plate for nine innings. We can't keep falling behind and waiting to get our offense started."

The Trojans (23-19, 10-12 Sun Belt Conference) touched Cajun starter Tim Ramon (6-3) for four runs in the third inning to take the early lead. Starting pitcher Chris Hall, who doubled as the UALR designated hitter, highlighted the inning with a two-run home run – the first allowed by Ramon in more than 80 innings of work this season.

However, like they have done through much of the season, the Cajuns (26-24, 10-12 SBC) battled back, scratching out three runs in the sixth inning to cut the lead to one.

Mike Kabel led off the inning with a double to the right-center gap and, two batters later, Brad Saloom, who stretched his hitting streak to a career-long nine games with a first-inning single, walked. Bryan Sneed followed with an RBI single and Scott Atwood tagged an RBI triple to center field to cut the Trojan lead to 4-3.

However, Hall (4-4) escaped further damage by inducing an inning-ending ground out.

After Miguel Miranda led off the eighth with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Derin McMains, Andy Gros kept UALR off the board in the ninth, allowing the Cajuns to make one last effort at the victory.

Down to their last out, the Cajuns made a push at Hall. Jarvis Larry drew a walk and Rick Haydel lined a single to left that chased Hall from the game. Brad Cherry entered the game and, on his first pitch, allowed pinch-runner Bret Bailey and Haydel to execute a double steal.

However, Cherry escaped the jam with a strikeout as the Trojans won their fifth straight game.

The series continues Saturday at 5 p.m. with the Cajuns sending Eric Templet (6-5, 3.66) to the mound against UALR's Bobby Reed.
