KENNING'S HOMER COMPLETES AGGIES RALLY TO STUN CAJUNS...May 13, 2001 LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Ryan Kenning's second two-run home run in the final three innings snapped an 11-all tie as New Mexico State spoiled Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun baseball team's bid to reach the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a 13-11 season-ending victory Sunday afternoon at Presley Askew Field. With the loss, Louisiana-Lafayette (28-28, 12-15 Sun Belt Conference) lost its chance to reach the tournament it will host at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field May 16-19. "We set ourselves up for this on Friday," Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux said. "You can't dig yourself out of every hole. It just happened that today we ran out of pitching." Early in the game, Louisiana-Lafayette, who needed to win two of three games entering the weekend to secure a spot in the tournament, looked like they would grab their first Sunday victory since March 25 against Florida International. Trailing 2-1 after three, the Cajuns grabbed a 4-2 lead on a two-run home run by Robert Shelton and an RBI double by Bret Bailey. After the Aggies (32-23, 9-17 SBC) evened the game with a pair of fourth-inning runs, the Cajuns' big bats made their biggest statement of the weekend. Rick Haydel and Tyler Tiesing gave Louisiana-Lafayette an 8-4 lead as each launched a two-run home run. The Aggies, though, scratched out single runs in the fifth and sixth before Neil Simoneaux delivered a two-out RBI single to extend the Cajun lead to 9-6. However, Kenning hammered his first two-run blast of the game off Andy Gros to give NMSU a short-lived 10-9 lead. Bryan Sneed, who finished the series 8-for-14 with eight RBI, made sure the Aggies would not be the only team fashioning a comeback, as he slammed his third two-run home run of the series over the left-field wall to reestablish a one-run Cajun lead. Brandt Ray (2-7) escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the eighth before Jay Moya took Ray's first ninth-inning offering over the left-field wall to tie the game. Ray hit Kurt Wilkinson with a pitch before being lifted for Lance Stutes. Stutes entered and, after two pickoff throws, surrendered Kenning's 13th home run of the season.
