INDIANS TAKE RUBBER GAME FROM CAJUNS...April 8, 2001

JONESBORO, Ark. – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns rapped out only five hits in their series finale at Sun Belt Conference foe Arkansas State Sunday, but that was not what did the Cajuns in.

Instead, it was the four double plays the Indians turned and an RBI groundout by Lane Stafford in the sixth inning that turned the game in Arkansas State's favor as the Indians took their second straight victory over the Cajuns, winning 3-2 at Tomlinson Stadium.

"We had opportunities to strike early," Tony Robichaux said. "If we get the bunt down in the ninth, we can score and keep the game early. You look at how many one-run games we've lost and we haven't given ourselves much of a cushion at the plate."

The Cajuns struck early against Arkansas State starter John Anderson when Brad Saloom singled in Neil Simoneaux with two outs in the first. Saloom's single was the third hit of the Cajun first, but with runners on first and second and no outs, the Indians (13-21, 6-6) turned their first double play of the game.

Anderson then allowed only one more hit in his last six innings of work, keeping the Cajuns at bay while the Indians made their move.

The Cajuns (21-16, 6-6 SBC) then took advantage of Allen Mazzanti's two-base throwing error to start the sixth inning. Two batters later, Bryan Sneed's grounder scored pinch-runner Bret Bailey to give the Cajuns a 2-0 lead.

However, the Indians responded in the sixth, finally breaking through against Eric Templet, who had blanked Arkansas State through five innings, striking out eight.

In the sixth, Kyle Brunen led off with a double down the left-field line and Brock Buckingham knocked him home with an RBI single. Then, George Sterner drove Buckingham home with a double to right-center that tied the game. Tony Arthur then drew a walk that drove Templet (4-5) from the game.

Andy Gros relieved Templet and induced a grounder from Stafford. However, Neil Simoneaux's only play was to first as Sterner scored from third.

"That's the way we've been playing," Robichaux said. "We've played mediocre and 6-6 is mediocre. Eric threw a great ball game. We needed to get out of that inning without giving up a 3-run inning and we didn't. Eric had good stuff. We just didn't protect him as hitters."

The Cajuns return to action Tuesday night at Zephyr Field in New Orleans against LSU before returning home to face Sun Belt rival South Alabama at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field over Easter weekend.
