COLONELS OUTLAST CAJUNS IN EXTRA INNINGS...April 3, 2001

THIBODAUX – Instead of being a case where the first team to make a mistake would win, Tuesday night's game between Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns and Nicholls State at Ray Didier Field was a case of whoever came up with the big hit would be the victor.

In this case, the big hit was not a hit at all. Instead, it was a sacrifice bunt and a heads-up base-running play.

Nicholls State's Rondon Anderson, known more for his power, used his speed to advance from first to third on a sacrifice bunt in the 10th inning and Eron Morrow slapped a game-winning single past a diving Neil Simoneaux for a 3-2 Nicholls State victory.

Anderson's play set up the winning run, but this was a case of missing chances to score.

Both teams had ample opportunities to score early and often, as they combined to strand 17 runners. The Cajuns (20-14) left eight on, including five in scoring position.

But, they managed to strike first on a two-run, third-inning single by Rick Haydel that scored Scott Atwood and Jarvis Larry, who had opened the frame with back-to-back singles and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Neil Simoneaux.

However, the Colonels (19-16) returned fire in the sixth.

After being handcuffed through the first five innings by Rusty Begnaud and Lance Stutes, Nicholls State finally broke through against Stutes in the sixth on a Doug Gill homer and an RBI single by Kevin Larpenter.

The Colonels, who had been held to one hit through the first five, put up three hits in the sixth en route to tying the game.

Begnaud gave the Cajuns a boost in his first career start, tossing four, one-hit scoreless innings before back-to-back walks to start the fifth brought on Stutes.

Stutes retired the next three batters to end the threat before Gill opened the sixth with a home run.

Louisiana-Lafayette continues on its longest road trip of the season on Friday when they open a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Arkansas State with a 7 p.m. game.
